He maintained substantial influence if not outright daily control from a distance while he squatted in the White House.

Even if that were the case, having influence is not the same as before he left. It will take more than Bannon stepping down, to actually put Brietbart under. It's not as though he's irreplaceable. Nor does he necessarily need to be replaced.

Why do you axe?  Grin

Bannon went too far, .. and he's out of the loop and quite frankly, he shot his career to crap. He simply gambled  and went too far over the top.  Wink

Bannon was useful to Trump for a while, because he had his thumb on the pulse of the nascent populist wing of conservative America.  That delivered votes.

But in pushing for, you know, an actual populist agenda (like higher taxes for the rich), Bannon came into direct conflict with republican party orthodoxy.  He won the early rounds (and got the feckless Priebus ejected), but lost later rounds (against republican congressional leaders).

Bannon's lack of message discipline was never a problem or liability for him, just as it hasn't been for Trump.  Bannon was one of the mavericks, who came to drain the swamp.  But when his agenda collided with the one single republican policy item that has ever really been enacted (tax cuts for the top), he was no match for them.
