Tillerson: US Troops Will Stay in Syria

Tillerson Says U.S. Troops to Stay in Syria Beyond Battle With ISIS

WASHINGTON — American troops will remain in Syria long after their fight against the Islamic State to ensure that neither Iran nor President Bashar al-Assad of Syria take over areas that have been newly liberated with help from the United States, Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson said on Wednesday.

Staying in Syria, Mr. Tillerson said, will help ensure that the Trump administration does not repeat what he described as the mistakes of former President Barack Obama, who withdrew troops from Iraq before the extremist threat was doused and failed to stabilize Libya after NATO airstrikes that led to the overthrow of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi...

There were roughly 2,000 American troops in Syria last month, a mix of engineering units that build fortifications and Special Operations units that fight and train with local militias. Additionally, American military contractors in Syria help demine recaptured areas as the Islamic State is pushed back...

We're just going to repeat different mistakes.

I don't understand why we have to be there. Aren't they in some kind of civil war? Let them all kill each other.

Al Sadd has been the ally of Russia since they were the Soviet Union.  Syria has been their puppet just as North Korea has been China's.  Both Russia and China have designs on dividing up the globe between them.  It's pretty dicey after eight years of leading from behind and strategic patience.  While we ought not be nation building, ISIS is a good example of the kind of thing that happens when we totally disengage.  Enemies flourish!  It's pay me know or pay me later!  If Russia and China succeed and we abandon our allies to their fate,we will have no allies and be at the mercy of China and Russia and their surrogates in the expanded empires.

Our continued presense in Syria is illegal.  Congress has not authorized troops to be there.

Watched it.  A shotgun is for long ranged shooting.  That is why hunters like them.  An AR-15 is not.  That video was misleading.

We shouldn't be there.

This has nothing to do with us.

We have become far too accustomed to constant warfare. We don't even see it anymore. It's like Starbucks. It's just expected to be everywhere.

Look at this message board. Can any of us, without looking out up, name half of the countries where American troops are fighting, why, how we are doing and when/if Congress has authorized it?

Yet, what do we discuss?

The President used a naughty word and he may have talked to a Russian about dirt on Hillary.

We (myself included) are suffering some kind of madness.

But I digress. I'm complaining that we don't talk about serious matters on a thread about serious matters.

So, let's get back to it.

Syria isn't our concern.  Trump's biggest error so far is, as expected, the one thing he's done that won approval from the media: his missile strike on Syria last spring. It was, by any rational definition, an act of war and it was unjustified.

Who runs Syria has no impact on us. It isn't worth American lives and, though I don't want a draft, we'd never be involved there if we had one. We wouldn't stand for it, but since we have a volunteer army, we're ok with it. That should tell us something.

The last part of this is the easiest to answer since there have only been 2 Congressional authorizations. Most of what we're doing has never been authorized by Congress and no new authorizations seem to be forthcoming; furthermore, Congress is not exercising its responsibilities via the War Powers Resolution (or even the power of the purse).

Where we are is much harder to answer as some if this isn't known until there are casualties or someone spills the beans. We're operating in several African nations and throughout much of the Middle East.
