That's the long and short of it. Not sure they would actually go through with it if we don't leave, but if they do, that could potentially put some of our troops - those advising the Kurds - in direct conflict with our NATO "ally."

As Pompeo said today: "America is a force for good in the Middle East."

This trip is especially meaningful for me as an evangelical Christian, coming so soon after the Coptic Church’s Christmas celebrations. This is an important time. We’re all children of Abraham: Christians, Muslims, Jews. In my office, I keep a Bible open on my desk to remind me of God and His Word, and The Truth.

And it’s the truth, lower-case “t,” that I’m here to talk about today. It is a truth that isn’t often spoken in this part of the world, but because I’m a military man by training, I’ll be very blunt and direct today: America is a force for good in the Middle East.

We need to acknowledge that truth, because if we don’t, we make bad choices – now and in the future. And our choices, the choices we make today have consequences for nations, and for millions and millions of people, for our safety, for our economic prosperity, for our personal freedoms, and those of our children.

"And it’s the truth, lower-case “t,” that I’m here to talk about today."

Yes, yes you are.

If US backtracks in Syria, Iraq hopes to fill its shoes

Iraq expects to play an official role in the Syrian transition, especially once things stabilize and more countries reopen their embassies in Damascus, as the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain did recently.

On Dec. 30, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said a group of Iraqi officials had met the day before with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The delegation included national security adviser Faleh al-Fayad, who also heads Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units...

Just thought I'd add this to the thread because at this point it's very hard to figure out what these crappity smackers are up to.

U.S. official says troop withdrawal from Syria has started - Politico - 01/11/19

After days of back and forth over U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to pullout American troops from Syria, a U.S. military official said Friday the process of withdrawal has begun, declining to comment on specific timetables or movements.

Col. Sean Ryan, spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group, said “the process of our deliberate withdrawal from Syria” has started.

<snip>

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the conflict in Syria through a network of activists on the ground, said the withdrawal began Thursday night. It said a convoy of about 10 armored vehicles, in addition to some trucks, pulled out from Syria’s northeastern town of Rmeilan into Iraq.

Yup, things are as clear as mud right now.

Just saw where the AP had to correct their report that no forces were being withdrawn. Congress also doesn't seem to be any clearer on the withdrawal, even after a briefing. And a Democratic Senator is arguing that we have to stay.

You kinda get the feeling there's still some behind the scenes fighting going on.

Frankly, if you pay enough attention and you do it for long enough, you kind of get the feeling nearly every part of the government is being fought over.

It makes it hard to tell if Trump is the origin of the chaos or if the "resistance" of the bureaucracy is the origin of the chaos.  And to be honest, that's the source of my own conflicts where Trump as president is concerned.

I guess ... does it matter in the end if it looks the same either way?
