U.S. Says Assad May Be Using Chemical Weapons in Syria Again

WASHINGTON — The State Department said on Tuesday that the Syrian government might be renewing its use of chemical weapons, citing a suspected chlorine attack in northwest Syria, and maintaining that any use of such weapons would lead the United States and its allies to “respond quickly and appropriately.”

The Trump administration said the suspected attack took place on Sunday in the Idlib area, the final stronghold of rebels who have tried to topple the government of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria...

Just gonna be annoying and chime in again.

We are not getting out of Syria.  The amount of money changing hands in the middle east is truly breathtaking.  And as I said in my post about it several months ago ... it's not oil.  It's workers in these areas who have no guarantee of long term income so have no incentive to hurry and complete grant funded municipal projects and move on to the next project when there's no guarantee of another project and more income.  It's building projects that the state department refuses to admit failure on and keeps throwing money at until they can call it a "success."  My friend on the ground there talked about hospitals with 2 beds and incomplete walls that the state department writes off as a successful project.  (I'm going to lunch with him again tomorrow and am going to be picking his brain for more info.)

But the bottom line is this ... these projects and the revenue they bring to the "governors" in these regions have a life not beholden to the 4 year presidential cycle.

We're not getting out of Syria.

I would disagree with the reason we're still there, since there's really nothing left to stabilize; Assad's pretty much taken the country back.

The reason we're staying is (at least until the last of the opposition is rooted out): Iran.

I will be interested to see how we handle this latest alleged chemical weapons attacked. The administration already launched attacks on Assad and threatened others.

Yeah I'm making a sweeping judgment about the Middle East in general.

U.S. Yet to Find Evidence of New Chemical Weapons Attack in Syria

WASHINGTON — The United States has found no evidence so far that President Bashar al-Assad’s forces have begun again using chemical weapons in Syria’s continuing civil war, the top American diplomat for Syria said on Wednesday, a day after the State Department warned of an “alleged chlorine attack” in the country’s northwest.

The diplomat, James F. Jeffrey, the special representative for Syria and a veteran Foreign Service officer, said during a congressional hearing that the Syrian military had been carrying out bombings in the area around Idlib, the last rebel stronghold, that “have been indiscriminate and very vicious.”

“We’re watching this very closely — also the reports of chemical weapons use,” he said. “So far we cannot confirm it, but we are watching it"...

For what it's worth ... James F Jeffrey has an interesting and long pedigree.

Islamic State suspects sent by U.S. from Syria to Iraq

BAGHDAD/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - U.S. forces have quietly sent at least 30 suspected foreign Islamic State fighters captured in Syria last year and in late 2017 to stand trial in Iraq, interviews with the men, Iraqi sources and court documents show...

The U.S. military’s Central Command, which oversees U.S. forces in the Middle East, declined to comment on Reuters’ findings, but acknowledged the challenges posed by detainees captured by Kurdish militias, whose authority is not internationally recognized..

The SDF declined to comment on the question of prisoner transfers, referring Reuters to Iraqi authorities. The SDF has said it wants to get rid of foreign fighters because it is not in a position to put them on trial...

Well, that is one way to resolve the issue.

Trump Tweets to Syria and its Allies Stop 'Bombing The Hell Out of Idlib'

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump is demanding Syria, Russia and Iran stop "bombing the hell out of Idlib province in Syria..."

Trump, in comments to reporters at the White House Sunday, also noted his call last year for Syria and its allies to avoid an all-out offensive in Idlib due to humanitarian concerns...

Russia and Turkey broker ceasefire in Syria's Idlib, say Russian news agencies

MOSCOW (REUTERS) - Russia and Turkey have brokered a complete ceasefire in Syria's Idlib province between Syrian government forces and rebels, Russian news agencies cited the Russian military as saying on Wednesday (June 12).

The Russian military said the ceasefire applied to the so-called Idlib de-escalation zone and had led to a significant reduction in violence on Wednesday, Russian news agencies reported.

They did not say how long the ceasefire would last...
