Netanyahu Presses Superpowers to Remove Iranian Forces from Syria

JERUSALEM — Hosting an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday of the Russian, American and Israeli national security advisers, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel pressed for ridding Syria of all foreign forces, in particular Iranians and their proxies across Israel’s northern frontier.

With the eight-year Syrian civil war winding down, Mr. Netanyahu said, “I believe that there is a wider basis for cooperation between the three of us than many believe.”

This meeting, he said, the first of national security advisers from all three countries, provides “a real opportunity” to advance stability in the region, “and particularly in Syria...”

SYRIA ACCUSES ISRAEL OF "STATE TERRORISM" FOR ALLEGED AIRSTRIKES

Syria accused Israel of “state terrorism” after alleged Israeli airstrikes on Monday targeting Iranian military positions killed 15 people, including six civilians, and warned that it would change how it responds to future airstrikes.

“Israeli authorities are increasingly practicing state terrorism,” Syria’s foreign ministry was quoted as saying by SANA news agency, adding that “the latest heinous Israeli aggression falls within the framework of ongoing Israeli attempts to prolong the crisis in Syria.”

Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad also warned that “we will change the way we will respond in the future...

Turkey has 'no patience left' with U.S. on Syria safe zone

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Wednesday that new U.S. proposals for a safe zone in northern Syria fall short and Turkey was running out of patience as Washington appears to be stalling in efforts to seal an agreement.

U.S. special envoy for Syria James Jeffrey held talks in Ankara this week on the zone and other issues, including progress on a roadmap agreed last year for the northern town of Manbij to be cleared of the Kurdish YPG militia...

But at a news conference in Ankara on Wednesday, Cavusoglu said that the two countries had failed to agree on how deep the safe zone would be, who would control it and whether the YPG would be completely removed from the area...

Was it a mistake to have allowed Turkey into NATO in the first place?

At the time - considering what NATO's mission was - no, it wasn't a mistake.

I think what this points out is we - the United States - need to take a long, hard look at our role and policies in the Middle East, and also that we need to take a look at what NATO's actual mission is in the 21st Century.

Well stated!  The rise of Islamic jihad has changed everything!  We certainly were not prepared for the class of civilizations which has followed.   Westernized Muslims are the main targets/victims of the Islamists, but western democracies are their enemy and that makes us a target, regardless of what our policies are towards the Middle East.  We have attempted to support "moderate" Muslim nations only to see the radical jihadist take over and implement Sharia Law, which can not exist with modern, western democratic cultures.

Assad’s control over Syria’s security apparatus is limited

Earlier this month, Syria saw its most extensive security reshuffle since the bombing of the National Security Bureau headquarters in July 2012. More than half-a-dozen intelligence heads were appointed, promoted or retired, and more than 50 officers were transferred within the Ministry of Interior. Some might see this high-level and wide-ranging reshuffle as evidence of President Bashar al-Assad’s supremacy over the security apparatus. However, there are strong indications that Bashar’s control is far more constrained.

As it transitions from recapturing opposition territory to reasserting the state’s dominance in much of the country, Damascus faces challenges from its own security apparatus, empowered and enlarged after eight years of conflict. Competitions among security actors now pose a risk to reconsolidating the state.

Contests for local dominance among regime security actors have escalated to arrests of one another’s personnel, open clashes and violence. As Assad and his deputies attempt to navigate these competitions, they are limited, balancing conflicting interests and responding to crises as they arise...

Syrian insurgents withdraw from key town as government forces push in

Amman, Jordan —  Syrian pro-government forces surrounded a key town in rebel-held Idlib province Tuesday, hours after rebels withdrew from the area.

The government’s advance into the town of Khan Sheikhoun, which has been in rebel hands since 2014, constitutes a major blow to the opposition; during the eight years of the country’s civil war, it has lost all of its territories except Idlib...

Rami Abdul Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition war monitor, confirmed the withdrawal Tuesday, as did a number of other media activists and a rebel commander...

U.S. punishes Syria with sanctions — but allies like Jordan also pay a price

AMMAN, Jordan —  Hamdi Tabaa, 83, a Jordanian business leader who once served as the nation’s trade minister, walked into a meeting called by U.S. embassy officials in Amman.
It was early March, and Tabaa and his colleagues at the Jordanian Businessmen Assn. were expecting a friendly visit. Commerce between Jordan and the U.S. was on the rise; Tabaa figured the officials wanted to expand an already existing Free Trade Agreement between the two countries.

Instead, the Americans made a presentation that featured a warning, one they would repeat to Jordan’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, its Chamber of Commerce, and other governmental and private institutions. It focused on the Caesar Syrian Civilian Protection Act, a piece of sanctions legislation that has been kicking around Washington for years without being passed by the Senate. In its current manifestation, it would sanction any foreigner who does business with Syria...

U.S. Poised to Send 150 Troops to Patrol Northeastern Syria

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is preparing to send about 150 troops to northeastern Syria to conduct ground patrols with Turkish forces, reversing at least temporarily a withdrawal from Syria that President Trump ordered last December.

The new troop deployment, which has not been previously reported, is part of an expanding series of military and diplomatic steps the United States has taken in recent weeks to defuse escalating tensions with Turkey, a NATO ally, over American support for Syrian Kurdish fighters. Those fighters led the ground war against the Islamic State, a shared enemy, but Turkey considers them terrorists.

The United States currently has just under 1,000 troops in Syria, mainly to help stamp out remaining pockets of Islamic State fighters...

More US troops could go to Syria to help reduce tensions with Turkey

(CNN)The US military is weighing shifting a small number of additional troops to northeast Syria as part of ongoing efforts to establish a buffer zone along the Syria-Turkey border, a US defense official tells CNN.

The defense official said no decision had been made, and that if any additional forces are sent to Syria they will likely be redeployed from elsewhere in the region. The troops would patrol the proposed buffer zone...

While the Pentagon does not talk troop numbers in Syria, officials tell CNN that the military has reduced the number of US troops there to about 1,000...
