These countries aren't even the largest share of imported steel into the US.

"The top supplier to the U.S. in 2017 was Canada, followed by Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and Russia. Other notables include Turkey, Japan and Taiwan. China is just outside the list at No. 11 despite producing about half of the world’s steel..." (Source)

And these are broad tariffs, so they're not going to just hit just China or S Korea (Source).

Yes, we need a coherent trade policy.

Canada need not be punished for China's cheating.

Actually the 'Delete' feature was deleted as the result of Abe using a glitch in YaBB that would drive a thread to the last page if you posted and then deleted that post..

That was part of the point I was proving.

In general no. I think people should get the best value possible. We use much more steel in mfg than we produce, so the net effect will be an increase to consumers.

That said, I believe there are some goods, like food, energy, where I think it’s important to be more domestically self reliant.

I’d want to see even tariffs between trade countries, so we are not at a disadvantage with trading partners, or relative to other competing companies in other countries.

You just that you were against tariffs before you said you were for them.

Other than in Seawolf's Safe Space.. the Christian mythology forum.. I haven't noticed posts being deleted based on position.  In the Political forum I've had my post deleted when I've cornered one of the protected class.. i.e. Right-wing nutjobs.

True. I did. I don’t think you can make a. Lanier statement to cover all situations.

Let’s suppose a country imposed a 50 percent tariff on goods coming from the us. I’d probably slap a tarriff on their goods.

Or let’s suppose we saw that a higher and higher percentage of our food supply came from overseas. And as a matter of desire, we wanted to be more self reliant on food supply (for whatever the reason). We may create a condition to increase tariffs to incentivize growers domestically to produce these crops, versus use taxpayer subsidies.

How many of you are old enough to remember when Japan was dumping automobiles in the US?  Do you recall how this was dealt with?  Here's a refresher:  https://crawford.anu.edu.au/pdf/pep/pep-310.pdf

Also, this...

U.S. to gradually drop tariffs on Japan vehicles under trade deal
Tokyo agrees to join Asia-Pacific trade talks; Detroit 3 opposed   April 12, 2013

The United States will gradually scrap auto tariffs on Japanese vehicles under a Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade pact after the two countries agreed on a deal that will allow Tokyo to take part in talks on the Asia-Pacific trade agreement.
http://www.autonews.com/article/20130412/OEM11/304129790/u.s.-to-gradually-drop-...

Using tariffs in response to dumping and other counties imposing tariffs and restricting imports for American producers, are nothing new!

With US companies producing 72% of the steel we consume, I'd say we're pretty self-reliant.

I was not aware of that. I saw a program last night and they claimed significantly the opposite. Saying most of our steel comes from Canada as an example.

I need to study this. Thanks for your post.
