I’m sure if the russkies started invading your country, we’d jump in and help you slap those commies silly.

Well we know those sissy stool pushers couldn't do it on their own.

That it's likely there will be sanctions or something.

How much do you want to take the world closer to the brink of an apocalyptic war because Russia wanted to off a Russian who spied on them?

This is what Russia does. Their state is full of nasty people.

A little advice to anybody thinking they want to spy on the Russian state: You'll likely be murdered in a terrible way, so you might want to reconsider.

And now, one of their sock puppets is our president...

Trump hit Syria with an airstrike in response to a chemical weapons attack down there.  Russia basically launches a chemical weapons attack inside the borders of our closest ally, and Trump can't muster even his usual wink-and-nod because of the reaming he's getting from the NRA for daring congressionals to oppose them.

That sword of damocles hangs perilously indeed over Donald's porcine neck.

Sanctions are imposed by the State.

This is disproportionate to a mere attempted murder.

Said attempted murder was of a traitor to the State (&his daughter) so it’s to be expected.

Hm.

Rabbit; is this attempted murder OK because of who the target is?

Murder is never "OK'.

That's not my point.

The point is if you pay a Russian to spy on Russia, you must understand the potential response. It's not to excuse the Russians' behavior, for again, the Russian government is full of very nasty people.

We should simply try to understand it.

Similarly, if we were to start bombing North Korea, or attempt assassination of Kim Jong Un, it should come as no surprise if the North Koreans begin bombarding Seoul. It's not to excuse the bombarding of Seoul, merely to attempt to foresee predictable consequences.

Trump is not responding to Russia because of the NRA?

Can you explain in more detail?

I think we all understand why, in broad terms, (some)  Russians did this.

What to do about it is more the question.

Some fairly robust responses to Russia from America.

There's the punishment side, which has already been discussed a bit with the talk of sanctions.

And then there's the obvious but never discussed side where we stop conducting espionage missions across the globe, both the US and the UK.

If attempting to murder a spy caught spying is an act of egregious war, then what is it to pay Russians to steal state secrets from Russia?

Why do you construct this strawman? No one is saying it is "an act of egregious war" and no one is expecting attacks in response. That said, if Iran attacked someone in the US with nerve gas Trump would be gearing up for war. Since this isn't Iran, how about some harsh words from Trump directed to Putin? That of course won't happen.

What are people worried about then? What's the point here? We want Trump to say some strong words?

I agree. If Iran tried to kill a former Iranian citizen who was spying on the Iranian state, and the attempted murder was on American soil, Trump would likely perform a military response. I would also disagree with that vehemently.

Oh noes!
