What getting "the belt" (he had this wide white belt that hung in his closet for that purpose) from my dad taught me and my sisters was how to sneak and lie better so we didn't get caught the next time around.  Oftentimes ... about 50% of the time ... the spankings weren't even justified.  They were just dad being crabby and taking offense because the driveway wasn't quite cleaned to his specifications.

My two children are 22 and 18 now and have never gotten a spanking from me.  It's never been necessary.  And I'm pretty proud of them both.  I think they're the better for it.

No. You're better for it.

Resented and hated both my folks for it too. What put me over the top was getting the belt for something I was not guilty of. Years later when I was angry at my own kids and the inner Mojo wanted to strike I remembered what it felt like. I've spared the rod and my kids are better people for it...

Hey!  Was your dad's name Virgil too???

As I got older I recognized that my dad was simply a product of his upbringing as well.  He grew up on a farm in North Dakota.  Sometimes the parenting of our forebears teaches us what NOT to do as much as what TO do.  Either way it's still a lesson in parenting.

A couple of years ago when my dad fell ill he quite emotionally tried to tell me he did the best he could.  I don't think I made him feel better when I pointed out that he had taught me a lot of lessons about parenting and that was one of them.  But /shrug.  I'm not much for sugarcoating.

It's not sugarcoating. It's parenting.

Of course not, Q.  Grin

I was just wondering how you knew that what has never been experienced by your children had no effect on them.

Well I can look at the lives me and my two sisters have lived and compare it to the lives my children are living I suppose.

Heh, my brother from another mother!

Yeah, my folks were products of their society too. Rural French Canadian Catholics who married and had kids young. They'd always say how it hurt them more than it does us while citing their own parents use of the belt. It made me and my brothers sincere little liars and that much more rebellious to all authority. The last time dad used it on me I stared him down and told him I was NOT guilty but didn't physically resist him.

We were never close after that and there was no real reconciliation before his passing. C'est la vie!  Undecided

I did, but back in the day, that was all our parents knew.  We know better now.  I spanked my kids once or twice when they were very little.  But I warned them that it would be the consequence for doing what I told them not to do and it was just a smack on the thigh or leg.

But Im sure they were punished or put on a type of restriction for not following rules or endangering themselves. Like me, punishment sucked, so I learned not to do it again. I didn't need to be hit, and neither did you or many others.
