US will help make North Korea rich if it disarms, says Mike Pompeo

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday (May 11) that if North Korea agrees to surrender its nuclear arsenal, Washington will work with Pyongyang to rebuild its tiny economy.

"If North Korea takes bold action to quickly denuclearise, the United States is prepared to work with North Korea to achieve prosperity on par with our South Korean friends," he said...

But both Kang and Pompeo insisted that they agreed on the need for the "total, complete, permanent and verifiable" denuclearisation of the divided peninsula.

And Pompeo said the United States would remain on board to help develop the North's economy, which has been devastated by its own mismanagement and crippling international sanctions...

The pair, he said, talked "about how it is he wishes to proceed and if he's prepared, in exchange for the assurances that we're ready to provide him, if he is prepared to fully denuclearise.

"We'll require a robust verification programme, one that we would undertake with partners around the world which would achieve that outcome," he warned...

Is Mike Pompeo backing off Trump’s demand that North Korea get rid of its nukes?

...The newly installed top U.S. diplomat at times seemed to echo Trump's hard line. He reiterated on “Fox News Sunday” that Trump's goal was “the complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization of North Korea.” Pompeo confirmed when asked by “Face the Nation” that the goal was “total, full, complete” denuclearization. Asked whether that meant “dismantling,” “getting rid of the centrifuges, stopping all enrichment, getting inspectors on the ground,” Pompeo confirmed all of it.

But at different points, he also appeared to suggest that a deal might come up shy of making North Korea get rid of all of its current nukes. He said on both shows that the objective was to prevent North Korea from having the capability to strike the United States with a nuclear weapon. And he explicitly called for its getting rid of missiles, without saying the same about existing warheads...

It seems possible Pompeo is using the talking point about Kim striking the United States simply because of Trump's “America First” approach. Perhaps it's just his way of reinforcing the stakes of this potential deal specifically for Americans.

But a closer parse suggests that there may be more focus on Kim's halting the existing nuclear program and getting rid of his Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) program — which would be the delivery system for striking the United States. Pompeo explicitly talks about needing North Korea to “get rid of your [chemical weapons] program and missiles that threaten the world,” but he doesn't say the same thing about getting rid of nukes...

Honestly, that would be the outcome I most expect from this first summit, laying the groundwork for future talks and eventual denuclearization (optimistically).

10 Americans were released from NK under Obama.  I applaud the release of these 3, and I applaud whatever Trump might have done to speed that along, but it's worth noting that Trump is not the first president to have seen NK release people.

North Korea has Begun Dismantlement of the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site

After initial reporting of plans to allow experts and media personnel to observe the closing of North Korea’s Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site,[1] now scheduled for next week,[2] commercial satellite imagery from May 7 provided the first definitive evidence that dismantlement of the test site was already well underway.[3] Several key operational support buildings, located just outside the North, West and South Portals, have been razed since our last analysis. Some of the rails for the mining carts, which had led from the tunnels to their respective spoil piles, have apparently been removed. Additionally, some carts seem to have been tipped over and/or disassembled, and several small sheds/outbuildings around the site had been removed.

Other more substantial buildings around the facility remain intact, including the two largest buildings at the Command Center, and the Main Administrative Support Area. Moreover, no tunnel entrances appear to have yet been permanently closed. This may be because on May 12, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) announced that the final dismantlement of the Punggye-ri nuclear test ground would be witnessed by foreign journalists and would involve the “collapsing all of its tunnels with explosions, blocking its entrances, and removing all observation facilities, research buildings and security posts"...

What were those people doing there?  This happens every once in awhile where some idiots wander into a country that is openly hostile to the US, then we have to bend foreign policy to get them out.  The US should announce that it will no longer make these extraordinary efforts to bail out idiots.

Come on Luther, just say it.  You're just dying to say some racist comment about them.  We know how you loons are the true racists in this country.  You don't like the Asians because they don't white wash the columns at the plantation.

You disgust me.

I am pleased to inform you that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in the air and on his way back from North Korea with the 3 wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting. They seem to be in good health. Also, good meeting with Kim Jong Un. Date & Place set.

North Korea reportedly cancels scheduled meeting with South Korea because of US military exercises

North Korea abruptly canceled talks with South Korea scheduled for Wednesday and threatened to walk away from talks with the U.S., according to media reports.

North Korea's state-run Central News Agency said the ongoing joint military drills between the U.S. and South Korea are a "provocation" and a preparation for an invasion, Reuters and South Korean news outlet Yonhap reported.

The move comes as U.S. President Donald Trump prepares to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in an unprecedented summit.

Yonhap and the Associated Press reported that North Korea is also threatening to cancel the talks with the U.S., currently scheduled for June 12 in Singapore, because of the joint military exercises...
