In my state we have legal gambling on most of the indian reservations and the state can't do anything about it. The reservations are considered sovereign nations even though they get a butt load of money from the feds.

I've always contended that if they are sovereign nations, why don't we have border crossings set up?

Another problem is cheating by sportsmen or criminals when big money is involved.

In the U.S. that might pose a problem for college sports (since players aren't paid while some schools and the NCAA make millions) or maybe some minor league sports.

The professional leagues are making too much money for players or owners to resort to cheating (this isn't the Chicago Black Sox era anymore). However, where the NBA did have a problem was the officials.

yes there are many players that make LOTS of $$$ in professional sports but there are a lot that do not. we read about the stars but there are many that never measure up, get hurt or have problems dealing with life. those are the ones that bookies or shady gamblers go after trying to get an edge, any edge.

^ Those are also the people who have little to no impact on the outcome of the game. Also, there hasn’t been a cheating issue with players in years. It was officiating where the problem was (uncovered in the NBA several years ago now).

yep you are right but a missed block a blown tackle a dropped fly even a missed free throw can change the outcome of the spread which is all the gamblers care about.

but you are right they don't have a big impact on the game.

I know that for years people thought that Tom Landry managed the end of games just to screw with the spread  LOL

So today the U.S. Supreme Court made a landmark decision that essentially allows states to legalize sports wagering. Until today, only Nevada had legal sports wagering. (Apparently, Congress passed some law prohibiting it years ago, but Nevada was “grandfathered” in.)

Would you like to see sports betting legalized in your state?

I can see the pros of legalizing sports gambling, but I also see the cons. The obvious benefit would be the added revenue it would bring. I read that around $150 billion is illegally wagered on sports every year. The pro-gambling argument is that getting even a slice of that amount would be an economic boon to the state.

I can see why the Supreme Court ruled the way it did. It’s a state rights issue.

But there are inherent dangers to gambling of any kind, and for that reason I hope Hawaii resists the economic temptation of sports betting. Currently, Hawaii is one of only two states that has  no legalized gambling whatsoever. I hope it stays that way.

One more question for you: If a state decides to legalize sports betting, how do you think it would impact local illegal gambling rings?

- not very "liberal" of liberal Hawaii not letting people gamble if they want? - who's business is it not to allow people to engage in such activities? - isnt that the liberals argument for what liberals want like pot?

Well it will be state sponsored gambling, so you do have a problem with it.

-not necessarily - why not at private casinos? - state regulated but is that even necessary or an excuse to tax it?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned one of the big downsides: the potential to corrupt sports players, managers, team owners.

It's also rather ... tawdry ... like Trump ...

- some claim the corruption comes when something is illegal - maybe legal casinos can catch crooks with all their monitoring?
