Arvo Part - 'My Heart's in the Highlands'
Jun 1st, 2018 at 5:32pm
Print Post
I first learned of Arvo Part in my college music history classes many moons ago.  He is an Orthodox Christian composer who works in what the mainstream calls a minimalist style but I would prefer to call an ascetic style, at the very least in the case below.  He is setting the words of an 18th century Scottish poem to Voice and Organ, and I think the music and poetry fit perfectly...the poetry of course, can be interpreted as more than just an Ode to the Highlands of Scotland, as Part is surely aware:

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer -
A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe; (=ree)
My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go.

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North
The birth place of Valour, the country of Worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

Farewell to the mountains high cover'd with snow;
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below; (=breed dal)
Farewell to the forrests and wild-hanging woods;
Farwell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer
Chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;
My heart's in the Highlands, whereever I go.
