IMO, they never should have gotten rid of the draft.  Actually, I believe that everyone should serve in the military for a minimum of 2 years.  It's not a punishment.  Israel has the right idea; everyone serves.

Remember LBJ? Remember George Hamilton the IV? He served, right? Oh, no. He dated LBJ's daughter, instead.

after the "greatest generation" won the war they went to DC & set it up as a piggy bank for their future with NO consideration for the debts that would befall their, & our, grandchildren.

Oddly, the British equivalent did no such thing.

Their children, however, babyboomed the crap out of later generations’ future.

Were there many libertarians back then?  What would they have said about the Nazi conquest of Europe?

"Ain't none o' our business.  Hey Jeb, help me slop the pigs out back."

Actually, quite a few people said that. And if it weren't for the attack on Pearl Harbor, it's debatable whether or not FDR could've dragged the country into what was seen as an European conflict.

But not every American back then was a chickenshit, immoral non interventionist.

And if FDR didn't "drag" us in, would we have been next on the Nazi menu after they took care of Britain?

You can argue counterfactuals if you want, but I'm responding to the question in your OP; the isolationist strain in American politics was very strong at the time.

Was that any better than having the country split between the Nazis and Japanese?

The Germans couldn't conquer Russia.

But they were going to take out America across an ocean? More populated, an industrial titan, and a citizenry armed to the teeth? Not likely. In fact, it's fanciful. There were no vegetarian American men back then, suffering from chronic low-T.
