Mind blowing indeed.  There might be life circling every star out there, still lodged in the single-cell soup stage.

Even complex life can get stuck.  Even with evolution.  The dinosaurs dominated this planet for some 130m years -- orders of magnitude longer than humans have -- but they never achieved the self-awareness necessary for some Fermi-esque outreach to the stars.

Maybe there are other planets with a similarly incredible chain of events that led to complex life.  But maybe intelligence is vanishingly rare.

One other point.  The universe is relatively young, when you're talking about the heavy elements needed to form rocky planets.  All the early stars were pure hydrogen, slowly converting to helium.  There were only trace amounts of anything heavier than lithium.  It took a generation of those stars to go nova in order to form and cast out heavier elements.

It seems possible that we had to go through 2 generations of stars going nova before those elements were common enough to make rocky planets common.  Given that our solar system is one-third as old as the universe, maybe we're part of the first generation of planets that even has a CHANCE at sustaining life, and we humans are the first life forms to achieve self-awareness.

Maybe life is common now, in the milky way, but thanks to our particularly good local conditions, we're the first to wake up.

Not exactly, if there can be exactitude when it comes to astronomical things.

The heaviest element a star can produce is iron. Elements heavier than iron are produced by supernovae. Our sun is too small to go supernovae. The elements dispersed by supernovae may aggregate into rocky planets like ours circling other stars.

We are lucky in that earth has an iron core which produces a magnetic field which in turn deflects the solar wind which otherwise would have swept our atmosphere away (as it is theorized happened on mag-less Mars).

There are so many stars in the universe it's quite possible other lucky combinations exist which have wound up producing life.

The landscape does absolutely nothing to tell you that there were reptile-like creatures on Mars.

I said "maybe". I said the land scape shows life was extremely likely.

I didn't say it shows there was reptiles. I said maybe.

Pay attention

Explain how the landscape does this.

Water brings the possibility of life. There was some type of liquid there. How about you explain to me how the land scape can look like a dried up Earth without out it being water that caused the landscape? Mercury looks like a hot moon, Venus is hell, and all the rest are gas.

You're still not paying attention. Are you still on the "I said there was defiantly reptiles thing"  Roll Eyes

Then say "the presence or evidence of water brings the possibility of life".

Rather than "Just looking at the land scape shows you life was extremely likely at one time." And then mentioning reptiles.

In other words, you don't know what 'organic' means.
