The United States got into the habit of 'helping' our less fortunate neighbors due to our prosperity in the aftermath of World War II and the fierce competition between the former Soviet Union and the US around the globe.  After the end of the Cold War, our habit of shouldering the burden of the problems of the world, just sort of lingered on.  Trade deals which were not reciprocal just became the norm.  Other nations have come to expect that the American taxpayers (as well as our military) will always carry their weight and support them.

Though not the full story, I think there is something to this.

Now mind you, I don't think tariffs in response to tariffs is a good move. Tariffs will not solve this inequity. They only harm the consumers within the nation enacting the tariffs.

But trade agreements that favor one side over the other definitely exist.

Tariffs should be equal for all, or there should be no tariffs at all.

Negotiating trade deals that favor other countries was stupid to begin with. These countries understandably have bo desire to change the terms.

No tariffs between countries. Genius. Media and critics silent.

Trump just shit all over your hero worship.

Trump throws G-7 into disarray with tweets after he leaves

Lashing out at the longtime U.S. ally and northern neighbor, President Donald Trump tweeted that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is "dishonest & weak" and that the U.S. was pulling back its endorsement of the G-7 summit's communique in part because of what he called Trudeau's "false statements" at a news conference.

In an extraordinary set of tweets aboard Air Force One, on its way to Singapore for Tuesday's summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, Trump threw the G-7 summit into disarray Saturday and threatened to escalate his trade war just as Canada released the G-7's official communique. Its statement took a generally positive view of the leaders' positions on trade matters while acknowledging tensions with the U.S.

A few hours earlier, Trudeau had told reporters that all seven leaders had come together to sign the joint declaration.

Trump tweeted: "Based on Justin's false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!"

If we somehow got all nations to agree to end tariffs, then someone would start subsidizing their local producers for local consumption, making those goods artificially cheaper and ending competition from foreign suppliers.  In effect, the same thing as a tariff.

What about countries that exploit economic slavery to secure low labor costs?  Is it "fair" that they get to beat competitors in the US, who don't share that advantage?  Or Chinese factories that dump coal pollution in the global commons - should be able to out-compete cleaner American factories, thanks to the lower energy prices they pay?

International trade is very complex and awash in technical details.  Not Trump's strong points.

I will also remind you that NAFTA was bitterly opposed by many people, INCLUDING TRUMP, because companies would be able to move factories and jobs to Mexico in a free-trade zone.

That's a complete and deliberate misrepresentation of the objections the left has had to NAFTA since its inception.
