S. Korea, Japan, Pentagon surprised by Trump's concession to N. Korea
Jun 12th, 2018 at 5:12pm
Print Post
At Tuesday’s press conference in Singapore following his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, President Trump surprised America’s Asian allies, and reportedly his own Pentagon, by surrendering a major bargaining chip in the form of U.S.-South Korea military exercises.

“We will be stopping the war games, which will save us a tremendous amount of money, unless and until we see that the future negotiation is not going as it should,” Trump told reporters, referring to the annual exercises as “provocative.”
.
.
.
Equally surprising as Trump’s military announcement was the fact that he reportedly took this unilateral step without notifying South Korean and Japanese allies, or the Pentagon.

Seems logical. I'm absolutely serious. They can be started again in an instant, but it's a show of good faith.

He's the Commander of Cheese Commander-in-Chief. He doesn't have to notify anybody to a cancellation of military exercises. He just makes the decision.

Kim is a great guy who loves his country very much, so why not go batshit and undermine our allies? Sounds like fun. I'm sure it will all work out in the end. Art of the deal and such. Hell, he just got done shitting on the G7, might as well stick it to Japan and S. Korea.

Obama did this and it would be holy hell from the right for the remainder of his Presidency on selling out US security and our allies. That same sorry crew will now make excuses and rationalize the actions they would normally condemn because they are idiots.

Aren't these exercises simply a show? It's not like we don't know how to kick the kimchee suckers' butts.

I just want this to lead to our troops coming home. That would be ideal.

And it would be virtually impossible to reverse this and have military exercises with South Korea since we don't have a base or any troops there.

Even the Pentagon was surprised.

Of course he CAN do this, but that doesn't mean you SHOULD do it. He CAN nuke N. Korea (in theory), but he should not. He CAN start a war with Iran, but I assume you agree he should not. So, saying he can do something within his powers is simply filler with no bearing on this.

So, what is NK's show of good faith? Specifically. Can you post that up? What is their specific immediate show of good faith?

What do you think "undermine our allies" means?

How on earth does this "stick it to" those countries?

In what way are they damaged here?

You're not wrong. So you're just going to emulate them? Is that your plan? Talk that through with yourself for a little bit.

Ok. I'll finish the implied thought. He can do this, and it's no big deal.

Not really anything. But then, they're the backwards, isolated , dirt poor country in all this. So it was probably up to the West to make the first showing of good faith.

First showing of good faith?  The west has bailed out North Korea repeatedly, and the North Koreans proceeded with their nuke program regardless.

These exercises are military readiness training.  They're not just a show-of-force.  The military has to conduct training for the missions they might have to carry out.  For South Korea and the US forces deployed there, that mission is to defend against North Korea.  Training isn't really "optional".

Can the maneuvers be delayed?  Yes.  Is it as easy as snapping a finger?  Absolutely not.  Orders, supply chains, and a long cascade of other events and agreements are all impacted.

The exercises are a show of force. Nothing more. There would be very little “fighting” and “battles” in a war with North Korea. It would be cleaning up, both from the initial and immediate artillery barrage into South Korea, and the devastated corpse of a country in the north.
