Dude, everyone agrees. It's great. He can salute Xi and Putin as well next opportunity.

My God! Can you imagine the spell that would create? The Witch's Hand Gesture which has been known to open portals to other more evil dimensions, otherwise known as the Salute?

The chaos that would cause. Holy s**t!

When I attack Trump, the right-wing members of the board seem to back off. Generally because I'm bringing up a solid point.

When I defend Trump, also using a reasonable point, the left-wing members of the board only double down.

The people whose preferred politicians are out of power are generally far more hysterical and lack self-awareness.

This isn't even really me defending Trump. It's me being intolerant towards hysteria.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯  I think it's great dude. He shows deference this way. He needs to get in the habit. Makes us all more respectful of the world.

This bothers me about as much as Obama bowing to the Japanese emperor, which is to say, not at all.

Read an article. Trump went to shake hands, and the general saluted Trump. As Trump returned the salute, the general then went to shake hands.

What you're seeing is a "picture", which captures only one moment in time.

OK, I read more than one article.

In general, military personnel out of uniform (in civvies) do not salute. It is required for military personnel in uniform. Before Reagan, presidents did not salute military personnel, even when saluted by them. That was more or less protocol.

The NK general probably knew that Trump had never served in the military, as well as being out of uniform. So he probably did not expect Trump to return the salute, hence he followed up his own salute with a handshake.

It is something of a grey are regarding who is allowed to salute (vs. who is required). Some say civilians should not be allowed to salute. Others say they can but it's by no means required. Some say if they were in uniform and saluted by a civilian they would not return the salute. And so on.

I believe I've given a reasonable interpretation of this just one photo of a moment in time. It still indicates that Trump wasn't following traditional protocol, which accounts for the somewhat surprised look on Kim's face (who did serve in his military).

Do I really care? Nope. I work with an older Vietnamese gentleman (74 years old) who fought for SV and wound up in prison for many years after the war, until he escaped and emigrated to the USA. I often give him a quick salute out of respect when passing him in a hallway. He will smile and give a quick salute back. It's just nicer that way.

Oh, and he doesn't like talking about the war. Like most who served, it's something they'd rather not dwell upon.
