Could care less either way.

"Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the Christian religion, whose morality is so sublime and pure (and) which insures to the good eternal happiness, are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments."

Ah, the "I could care less" vs. "I couldn't care less" debate.

Clearly, from the context he could (i.e. might) care less about the hats than any other situation that might present itself to him.  Wink

Why is it a debate.

If you could care less, then you do care at least some, maybe a lot

I couldn't care less, means your caring is at rock bottom.

Well, there are three things about that.

1. I was only half serious, hence the smiley face.

2. Language is often not-literal.

3. If one absolutely insists on being "that guy" who must be serious about this and take the phrase literally, then one must also admit that the phrase is incomplete, making his judgement premature.

"I could care less" does not identify the objects being compared. "That guy" insists with no reason that the objects he is comparing are the situation under discussion with itself.

From the context, the only conclusion is the one I gave. He could care less about this situation than he could care about anything else.

But you don't really want to be "that guy," do you?

In that case, the statement is not simply not literal, it's faulty. "I could care less" is stupid and betrays a deplorable lack of semantic grasp of the language.

You often make me smile, BH. Unintentionally, I'm sure, but there you go.

Oh, you'd love Wales. No extreme weather and it rains almost always so it's always lush and green and in the summer it's not completely dark until about 10 at night. Of course in the winter it's a bit soul destroying  when it's pissing rain and dark at 4 in the afternoon.

You shouldn't smile with your head up your own ass, it colors your teeth brown. Then again you probably like it.
