I'm a little older. We had erector sets and tinker toys before Lincoln logs came along, but above all else were the chemistry sets of the 50s. You could melt, burn and blow stuff up in the name of "but Mom, I'm learning stuff." What was wrong with her, of course we weren't going to burn the house down - we knew what we were doing (in the basement), after all, we were 9 years old.

And the traditional shotgun at 12, while not a toy, stands out as I entertainment and a signal that "children's toys" would soon be in my past.

Oh yes, erector sets with 10 billion tiny screws and nuts to lose in the carpet.  Of course my dad would step on them in his bare feet and bellow something profane.

I never had star wars toys.

Legos and logs cause I loved to create.
I was never into si-fi junk. My cars were matchbox cars you saw on the streets, not Hot Wheels.

This is a fantastic mini-series on Netflix about popular toys from the past and how they came to be.

LINK

I've watched the episodes on Star Wars and Masters of the Universe and both have been excellent.

It's interesting because they go into the business side of things and the artistic side of things. So, they talk to the guys that made the licensing deals, the guys that worked with the toy stores and the guys that designed the toys.

Not only is it cool to see how some of the toys that brought me joy when I was a kid came into being, but it's also a fascinating lesson in capitalism: seeing how a product goes from imagination to physical object.

If you get a chance, check it out.

We watched the first season and haven't gotten to the second yet.

Fascinating.  We watched an episode every night.  Was some nostalgic shit.  My wife and I had lots of conversations about toys from our childhood afterwards.

When I was a kid, all we had to play with was rocks and sticks, and I had to walk 12 miles to school, uphill both ways.

There's a thing about rocks and sticks... they'll break your bones.

FC,

I've been thinking about how I can respond conversationally without coming across as a total dick.

☠☠☠

We didn't have many toys at all. We had bikes
and books and bats and balls and racquets and
board games and puzzles and musical instruments,
and we had hunting, fishing and camping gear,
and we all had chores and other work to do. But,
and I never really thought about this before now,
we really didn't have what many would call "toys".

Banned for your sins.

Risen so that you may find redemption.

Amen.
