Jewish beliefs on afterlife

One of our better posters stated, regarding Jews, "We do not believe in an afterlife" in another thread.  I found this:

https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/2970/jewish/Do-Jews-Believe-in-an...

and would like a little further discussion on the subject of Jewish beliefs concerning the afterlife.

Interesting, then how do the Jews explain Enoch and Elijah?

Good question.  I imagine there are Jews who DO believe in an afterlife.  I recall a little ditty that helped us younguns remember the difference between Sadducees and Pharisees.  Allegedly the Sadducees did not believe in an afterlife, so they were "Sad, you see."  Pharisees did so they were "Fair, you see."

The Jew in the link in the OP says there is no after life because, if I understand, "life never ends."  It just changes states.  Which is what Christians believe, too.

Sure, it changes states, from a state of existence to a state of inexistence.

Well, some things tend to catch my eye... things with a potential for being hilarious for example.

Let's face it, most of what you write is ridiculously boring rather than ridiculously funny.

It would more accurate to say that Jews do not agree about the afterlife.  Some believe in something like the Christian Heaven and Hell.  Others believe in reincarnation.  Others are annihilationists.

When I asked the first Orthodox Jew I ever met what he thought about the afterlife, he said something like "Whatever it is, it is not important enough for the Torah to describe in detail.  The Torah focuses on my life here, so I do, too.  The afterlife will be what it is."

"If cousins, I would much prefer to marry one my Neanderthal relatives than a screeching chimpanzee which might bite my face off as has happened recently. Of course, chimps are not even a human species so procreation between humans and chimps is out of the question." - joe_christian, on sex

Without an afterlife of sorts, religion is pointless.

Would be if Jesus had never raised from the dead and ascended into heaven by multiple eyewitness accounts.

I know you will dismiss the accounts out of your bias but it simply is impossible to believe that every one of the disciples would go to great lengths perpetuating a lie.  Even right up to some very horrific deaths without once recanting their story.  I simply can not recall such a lie being held on to despite the dire consequences of one's fate.  1 or 2, possibly but not all 11 up to their deaths.

The other story is Saul/Paul who was a persecutor of the Christians.  An advocate of exterminating all who proclaimed Jesus as the Messiah.  The bounty hunter for the teachers of the Jews who was and still is known for his willingness to murder believers to only have a conversion that baffled all the Jews AND Christians alike.
