Trump falsely claims nearly 3,000 Americans in Puerto Rico 'did not die'

Quote:

Nearly 3,000 people died in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. President Donald Trump denied this reality as a hurricane barrels toward the Carolinas.

"3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico. When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths. As time went by it did not go up by much. Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000," he said in a tweet Thursday morning as Carolinians prepared to be pummeled by Hurricane Florence.

Earlier this month, the island's governor formally raised the death toll from Hurricane Maria to an estimated 2,975 from 64 following a study conducted by researchers at The George Washington University. CNN's own reporting reflects similar numbers. The university study accounted for Puerto Ricans who succumbed to the stifling heat and other aftereffects of the storm and had not been previously counted in official figures. Much of the US territory was without power for weeks.

In a second tweet Thursday, Trump cast blame on Democrats, who he said are trying to make him look bad.

Did it ever dawn on you that not everybody thinks of Puerto Ricans as real Americans?

I think that's fairly obvious, at this point.

It's called accounting for "excess mortality", which means people who would have lived but succombed prematurely due to the havoc wrecked by the hurricane.

Trump apparently only wants to count those who were blown away or drowned on the day of the hurricane.

Small wonder, since the inadequate US response probably made a bad situation even worse.

They can't even vote in national elections. They are little more than a colony. They are a US possession. We only call them citizens because they used to come here and work as janitors and on loading docks. Maybe you can come up with a formula where that many Puerto Ricans count for this many Americans. Maybe you can use historical precedence and start at 3/5 and go down from there. Maybe President Trump already has. Give it a break already. We have real Americans in the path of a hurricane now. That's what really matters.

Your first paragraph is generally correct. Meaning the Harvard study estimated the number between 850 and 8000. The settled number was about the average of 3000

The major major problem and lie, is that this number is being compared to deaths from other storms. The established standard measurement has always been certified death certificates from the storm.

This is a completely different measurement and looks 4 months post storm and estimates deaths that may have occurred indirectly as a result of the storm.

I have no issues with both methods but you cannot use one method for one storm and compare it to another storm using a different methodology.

Any logical person would agree with this so it makes one wonder what’s the agenda for the false comparison.

I’d expect this type post from Greg, wads, fids etc. but math, logic, stats is not their strong suit.

So, in a demonstration of objectivity, I'm assuming that our resident leftists will blame Obama for the 600 deaths from Hurricane Matthew and call for a similar study of indirect deaths from that storm, correct?

Yeah, right.

With such bias and blatant double standards, yet they are shocked when we claim that their narrative is nothing but fake news.
