What's this now?  Pushback from a Republican?

Quote:
Senate Hopeful Rick Scott Breaks With Trump Over Puerto Rico Deaths

Florida GOP Gov. Rick Scott, who is trying to take Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson’s seat, broke with President Donald Trump on Thursday, saying he sees no reason to doubt nearly 3,000 people died following hurricanes in Puerto Rico last year.

During a morning Twitter rant, the president accused Puerto Rican officials and Democrats of lying about how many people died there after Hurricanes Maria and Irma pummeled the island in a coordinated effort to make him look bad.

He accused Democrats and Puerto Rican officials of driving up the death toll by adding deaths due to “any reason, like old age,” contending “they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths” when he left after a post-storms visit. “3000 people did not die,” he wrote.

“I disagree with @POTUS– an independent study said thousands were lost,” Scott tweeted later Thursday. “The loss of any life is tragic; the extent of lives lost as a result of Maria is heart wrenching. I'll continue to help PR”.

Scott followed Speaker Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., who earlier in the day also said he trusts the official death toll figures. Trump has praised Scott in the past; so far, he has not responded to the governor’s tweet.

Now why would he do that?  I have a theory.  Can anyone guess?

Thousands Fled Puerto Rico After Maria. But Can Florida Democrats Get Them to the Polls

Scott’s defensive maneuvers at his announcement highlight the opportunity Democrats have spotted. More than 1 million of the roughly 5.6 million Puerto Ricans living on the US mainland are in Florida. Steve Schale, a former Florida Obama campaign strategist, says Puerto Rican voters, largely concentrated in central Florida counties surrounding Orlando, could be a “nice, big chunk” of a winning coalition.

Your first paragraph is generally correct. Meaning the Harvard study estimated the number between 850 and 8000. The settled number was about the average of 3000

The major major problem and lie, is that this number is being compared to deaths from other storms. The established standard measurement has always been certified death certificates from the storm.

This is a completely different measurement and looks 4 months post storm and estimates deaths that may have occurred indirectly as a result of the storm.

I have no issues with both methods but you cannot use one method for one storm and compare it to another storm using a different methodology.

Any logical person would agree with this so it makes one wonder what’s the agenda for the false comparison.

I’d expect this type post from Greg, wads, fids etc. but math, logic, stats is not their strong suit.

Certainly comparisons should be made using the same criteria.  I bet the premature deaths from PR hurricane damage will greatly exceed those from mainland hurricanes, though, because their infrastructure did not, for whatever reason, recover nearly as fast as others similarly damaged.  In fact, "recover" might not be a good word to use when talking about PR.

Goppers up for election are realizing how poisonous Trump is electorally, and are scrambling like drowning rats to get as far away from him as they can.

It would appear that Rick Scott has figured out that Puerto Ricans that migrated to Florida after the hurricane CAN vote... Grin

Rick Scott is an idiot. When I lived in fla I voted for him. I regret it. I wish the dems has run a better candidate but even the 2nd time around it would have been one of the few times I voted dem. I vote for the candidate not the party and I was wrong this time.
