Apparently already billions of dollars in damage.  The whole lib media take on this will be what Trump did wrong, but a comment for those who look at news stories as worthy of discussion in other than a Trump attack:

People live in the gulf coast and east coast.  It's been known for centuries that hurricanes hit those areas.  So their house on the beach gets hit and they come to Uncle Sam for a hand out.  Why don't building codes in those areas specify construction standards that houses should withstand 200 mph hurricanes?  How about storm sewers capable of handling surges?  Is it always going to be build an inadequate house, wait for it to blow down, and then have the taxpayers bail you out?  Why are there never adequate local emergency services?  In southern California, there are strict anti-earthquake building codes.  That doesn't mean there won't be damage in a bad quake, but everything won't collapse like a cheap card table.  Why not fireproof materials required for people who live in forest areas?  Etc.

I don't think there should be any government-mandated building codes. Let people build houses as they wish. At the same time, improper planning has consequences. If you build a house of cardboard and a storm smashes it, the taxpayers shouldn't have to bail you out. Personal responsibility.

Yeah, but if your roof is blowing through town, it can kill people.  Better to have building codes.

I'm not convinced. Right now in Hawaii, our government is trying to limit how big we can build our houses.

Thanks for not sharing Jasmine's naive view of the world.

Yes, there is a need for building codes, planning, regulations, etc.

As you are probably aware, the government just doesn't come in and bail people out. In California, in addition to strict building codes, there are also programs to help homeowners reinforce the foundations on their homes. But not all homes are eligible, and there is a large chunk of residential and commercial real estate that can be expected to fail in a major shake. There is also a state-wide earthquake insurance program, to help insureds recover from quake damage. I bought into it at first, and then read the fine print about how there's no guarantee there will enough funds in the program to pay the insurance benefits in the event of a big quake. This in addition to very high deductibles, led me to think the earthquake insurance wasn't such a good deal. So, after I retrofitted the house foundation, I cancelled the insurance. There probably still will be damage, but at least the home has a better chance of not collapsing on its foundation.
