Apparently already billions of dollars in damage.  The whole lib media take on this will be what Trump did wrong, but a comment for those who look at news stories as worthy of discussion in other than a Trump attack:

People live in the gulf coast and east coast.  It's been known for centuries that hurricanes hit those areas.  So their house on the beach gets hit and they come to Uncle Sam for a hand out.  Why don't building codes in those areas specify construction standards that houses should withstand 200 mph hurricanes?  How about storm sewers capable of handling surges?  Is it always going to be build an inadequate house, wait for it to blow down, and then have the taxpayers bail you out?  Why are there never adequate local emergency services?  In southern California, there are strict anti-earthquake building codes.  That doesn't mean there won't be damage in a bad quake, but everything won't collapse like a cheap card table.  Why not fireproof materials required for people who live in forest areas?  Etc.

Welcome back and shame on whoever banned you considering how much of a blind eye gets turned on our rightwing trolls. It seems the rules don't really apply unless you're left of the dial.

I'm not convinced. Right now in Hawaii, our government is trying to limit how big we can build our houses.

That must be quite a worry for you.

By people who live in mansions....

Nope!

Jas claims it's all of Hawaii. I googled this subject and it's just a bill the Honolulu City Council started considering in January 2018. Apparently not the whole state, just Honolulu.

The problem, apparently, is that developers are buying up old small houses, and then expanding their size two or more fold, somehow getting variances to existing code to build out to the street, with no setbacks, put in up to nine bathrooms, etc. Then they sell the homes and reap what should be an illegal profit. They are called "monster homes" and would be illegal in many urban areas of the lower 48.

Do any of the people supporting this bill live in mansions? I very much doubt it. But the bitter bitchy LNF right makes up alternative facts as it goes.

“Monster Homes” – Hot Topic in Honolulu Neighborhoods

Quote:
Monster Homes – How Big is Too Big?

The proliferation of so called “monster homes” in Honolulu area neighborhoods is causing an outcry from members of the community who claim that the super-sized houses are putting a strain on the neighborhood and changing it for the worse.

Many of the lots in neighborhoods like Kaimuki are zoned R-5, which allows the building of one residence per 5,000 square feet of land. Many times this results in old homes being purchased, torn down, and replaced with multiple structures built on the property; however, monster homes differ from these typical multiple residence developments. These monster home structures tend to take up more than 75% of the lot space on which they stand, can have as many as 20+ bedrooms and often stand at 3 or more stories tall, built in residential districts.

Good post.  Good points.  In most of these disaster-prone areas, you can't even buy insurance for the likely disasters.  There's no flood insurance on the sandy beaches of NC, for instance.  Or rather, flood insurance is ruinously expensive.

We are, in effect, subsidizing poor land use.  Same with the flood-prone areas along the Mississippi.  After a second govt bail-out, all future support for rebuilding in a given lot should be withheld until the property is permanently condemned.
