" McSally can still serve in the U.S. Senate. Yes, even though she lost, it’s possible that she could represent Arizona in the U.S. Senate. It will take Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, who trounced his Democratic opponent to win another term, to sign off on it, and current Sen. Jon Kyl needs to resign. Kyl was appointed to fill the vacancy left by the late Sen. John McCain. The discussions on this route have already begun, as Kyl has zero interest in returning to public life. "

Sinema for Jeffey Flake and Martha McSally for John McCain.   That's an outcome that I can support!   Wink

So why wouldn't they just have an election?

McCain was reelected to a six year term in 2016.  Former Sen. Jon Kyl was appointed by the governor (who just won reelection) to fill the remainder of his term. However, Sen. Kyl has long ago retired and made it clear he only was taking the appointment on a temporary basis.  If he and the Gov. decide to appoint McSally, (He'd have to resign and then the Gov. would have to appoint her) the Republican voters who supported McSaly will be behind it.  It would be a win - win for Arizonans;  the Dems get their candidate and the Republicans get the one they wanted!

They couldn't hold a special election?

Various states fill vacancies in different ways.  In Arizona the Governor may appoint someone for the remainder of the term. You may recall there was a call for the Governor to appoint Cindy McCain! You also may recall that Illinois Gov.Blago said that Obama's vacant seat was "one valuable f**king thing" and he attempted to sell it to Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr..

"Blago" ended up in prison and Jessie ended up in a loony bin! Grin  You can't make this stuff up!  Grin Grin

McCain was reelected to another six year term in 2016.  This seat isn't up again until 2022!  God willing you and I will still be around to see what happens between now and then.  As the old political expression goes..." it's a long way 'til November "  It's a very long time until November of 2022!  Wink

It was a pretty narrow margin. Who knows how many illegals voted, by the way? Undecided  Anyways, a whole lot of Arizona Republicans voted for McSally.  Sometimes, the Devil you know is better than the devil you don't! If Kyle does step down and the Governor appoints a replacement, it ought to be someone who has been vetted through the rigors of a campaign, rather than an unknown person.

A Democrat hadn’t won an U.S. Senate seat there since 1988. Celebrating a narrow defeat ignores the fact that Republicans usually win comfortably there in statewide elections.  Roll Eyes
