I think he should choose to do it.

He should only be forced to do it if a law is created that does not simply single out Trump but applies to the President, the House, the Senate, and the Supreme Court.

Agreed. But I doubt that will ever happen.

It can be argued that he should release his tax returns, but if he doesn't want to, that is his right.

The House and the Senate can pass any bill they want, but they either need the President to agree or they need enough in both chambers to override his veto.

It's only been a recent fad for candidates to release their taxes.  Poor folk have no problem releasing their taxes. It's up to the IRS and a court to determine if anyone brakes the law.  The media would love to search the returns of any rich Republican just to make political points out of deductions which are perfectly legal but they can make into political harm for the candidate; politician. Any billionaire's taxes are going to have a whole lot of legal loopholes that the best team of CPA's have used to pay the least amount of taxes that is legal.

If there were truly nothing to be learned from his tax forms, he wouldn't be so keen on hiding them.

If the *only* thing that would be revealed is that his income is significantly lower than he claims, it would mean he misrepresented himself.  He campaigned on his self-declared identity as a successful billionaire.

Yes.  It would mean he misrepresented himself.  He may still be a billionaire.  He may still have a decent income (I mean he has documents showing a quarter billion in equity holdings and that alone would generate income significantly higher than the average American and would also make him at least as rich as Mitt Romney).  But perhaps his earnings more recently haven't been what he would like folks to see.  Heck, maybe he has even had some negative years.  That sort of thing happens when you are doing business at his level.

Quote:
I don't think he has done anything distinctly illegal from a tax perspective, otherwise the IRS would presumably have caught him.  (Though with their funding being cut drastically, maybe they aren't really looking.)

Was Obama cutting their funding, too?  I think even with minimal funding Trump would probably be a likely target given his business activities and income level.

Quote:
Rather, as others have pointed out, his forms would reveal whom he is doing business with, where his money is coming from, and whose favor he is actively trying to curry.

I think you have an incorrect understanding of what kind of detail is on a personal tax return.

Trump certainly does business via pass throughs.  There is almost no way he doesn't.  The last estimate I saw had him owning upwards of 500 pass through entities.

So his personal returns would show various amounts of income from pass through entities and corporations like, "Trump, LLC" "DJT, LLC", "The Trump Organization, LLC", "DJT Air, LLC", "Trump Doral, LLC", "Trump Tower Holding, LLC", Trump Holding, LLC", "Trump Books, LLC" and on and on and on.

Quote:
This is the whole point of having candidates publish their forms -- not to prove that they haven't broken any tax laws, but to shine a light on any conflicts of interest.

Recent history shows it is, more than anything, a way to tarnish a candidate for paying millions in taxes when people think they should have paid more millions in taxes.

Quote:
If, as seems likely,

Why does it "seem likely"?  Other than that the narrative says that it must be so?

Quote:
he has extensive business ties with Russia and Saudi Arabia,

What line, schedule, section, etc. of his return do you think would show these ties?

I have no idea how that applies to what I posted.. .

BUT as for what you posted.. You were screaming the loudest when the IRS was doing its job investigating political groups applying for tax-exempt status so did you want them doing their job then or now?

Oh, for heaven's sake, a person or group asking for tax exempt status is quite different than exposing a citizen's income tax form.   Surely, you aren't that dumb that you cannot see the difference?

Indeed.  He lied when he promised to release them.  That only adds to the urgency.  What is he hiding?

Urgency?  Why do you believe he is hiding something?  He gets audited every year.

Do the House lying/progressive/socialist,liberal/left-wing/dems even have the right to make that decision?  Under what cause?  Sounds like money envy, to me.
