Trump on Coming Debt Crisis: ‘I Won’t Be Here’ When It Blows Up

Since the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump’s aides and advisers have tried to convince him of the importance of tackling the national debt.

Sources close to the president say he has repeatedly shrugged it off, implying that he doesn’t have to worry about the money owed to America’s creditors—currently about $21 trillion—because he won’t be around to shoulder the blame when it becomes even more untenable.

The friction came to a head in early 2017 when senior officials offered Trump charts and graphics laying out the numbers and showing a “hockey stick” spike in the national debt in the not-too-distant future. In response, Trump noted that the data suggested the debt would reach a critical mass only after his possible second term in office.

“Yeah, but I won’t be here,” the president bluntly said, according to a source who was in the room when Trump made this comment during discussions on the debt.

The episode illustrates the extent of the president’s ambivalence toward tackling an issue that has previously animated the Republican Party from the days of Ronald Reagan to the presidency of Barack Obama.

But for those who have worked with Trump, it was par for the course. Several people close to the president, both within and outside his administration, confirmed that the national debt has never bothered him in a truly meaningful way, despite his public lip service. “I never once heard him talk about the debt,” one former senior White House official attested.

"Yeah, but I won't be here."

That attitude shows poor foresight and even worse leadership.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure it's the exact same attitude that Trump's predecessors had. It's the old kick-the-can-down-the-road act that has got us into this debt problem in the first place.

Not at all surprising coming from the man who described himself as "The King of Debt". He made a lot of money bankrupting companies while protecting his own skin, even profiting handsomely, and letting investors and banks bear the brunt of the consequences of his spendthrift ways.

The problem is, now the ones bearing the brunt of a national debt implosion will be the average American citizen. His base. When will it wake up to the Truth about Trump?

That's the same mindset every president and congressman who has had a hand in creating the debt have.

More blind partisanship from our resident shill. (Your shill-iness has now easily overtaken Stu.)

Seriously, how do you live with yourself?

Exactly. That's pretty easy to see. Only a blind partisan hack would refuse to see it.

I love George W. Bush, my favorite President of all time, but I can admit that he contributed to our national debt and didn't do much to try to fix the problem.

And yet they blame it on the person that has been there the shortest amount of time. Not Bush, Obama, Reagan, not the congressman that have been there for decades.

Do you think Ulysses is more on the stupid side or the dishonest side?

I'm leaning toward dishonest because nobody could possibly be this stupid.

He's not worth the effort. He's more partisan than Greg and I didn't think that was possible. He's also incredibly immature.

Do you deny that Trump has described himself as "The King of Debt"?
