Yellow vests and the failure of liberal idealism

So, unlike many who call themselves conservatives I fully believe that the industrial economy is very harmful to the environment.

But the approach of liberal leaders like Macron to the challenge posed by global warming is smug, hypocritical and unrealistic.

The approaches are smug and hypocritical in that generally there is a certain liberal idealism that says we can "save the world" if everyone just buys an electric car and puts some solar panels on their roof.  Lets even forget the world economy in its current form almost assuredly cannot be sustained (and for it to be sustained also means for it to grow bigger, since it is predicated on growth) merely on wind, solar and similar power sources (this is the unrealistic part of liberal environmental idealism).

Even if such power sources could sustain our economy, they are expensive.

So the smugness and hypocrisy comes into play when wealthy and upper middle class liberals, who can afford electric cars get them and then use them to virtue signal about how enlightened they are and call on others to make sacrifices, when in fact they have made none themselves, because buying an electric car for them is not a sacrifice but a way to virtue signal and feel holier-than-thou.

These wealthy liberals believe they can have their cake and eat it too.  They can have all the advantages of an elite first world lifestyle and still be environmentally friendly.  But it just doesn't work that way in reality, for the reasons mentioned above.

People will follow good examples.  If we had a truly virtuous leader, one who really made sacrifices and spoke the honest truth to the people on environmental issues (i.e., not empty headed, faux-idealistic pretty boys like Macron, Trudeau, Varadkhar, etc.), people might follow.

I don't see such a leader coming from the current crop of liberals either in the U.S. or Europe.  Let these people buy their electric cars...others, like the yellow vests, are more concerned with keeping their pantries full.

**On another note, the Yellow Vest movement can only be good for conservatism in the West.  Macron is a pro-EU stooge, and his power being greatly weakened, along with Merkel's imminent departure from the German stage, can pave the way for more conservative leaders to rise up in Europe.
