The Results of the Christmas Contest!

The explanations to the questions are below. Jump to the end if you want to see the winner!

1. How many ghosts visited Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas Eve? (1 point)

Four:

1. Jacob Marley visited Scrooge in his house.

2 & 3. The Ghosts of Christmas Past and Present came to him at his home and then took him around town.

4. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come came to him in the street and took him around town.

The other spirits Scrooge saw outside his window and such don't count as they didn't "visit" him.

2. Who eventually bought Ralphie Parker the Red Ryder BB gun? (1 point)

This question comes from the movie A Christmas Story and if you've never seen it, what are you doing with your life? Anyway, the answer is his father a.k.a "The Old Man."

3. Why is it ironic that this person bought him the gun? (1 point)

He's the only one Ralphie didn't mention the gun to. The Old Man was at the table when Ralphie mentioned it to his mother, but he wasn't addressing his father at the time. Every adult Ralphie did mention the gun to told him it was a bad idea, but the Old Man came through in the end.

4. Mary's husband Joseph had two things in common with another Joseph from the Old Testament. Check both of these things. (2 points)

According to the Bible, Joseph the son of Jacob and Joseph the husband of Mary both had divine visions in the form of dreams and both were exiled in Egypt for a time. See Genesis chapter 37 and Matthew chapters 1 and 2.

5. Which two of the Christmas carols below are sung from the point of view of the shepherds? (2 points)

Ok, so here we have a correction! Angels We Have Heard on High is absolutely from the point of view of the shepherds as they are the "We" in the title.

I wanted two songs from the shepherds' POV and I foolishly trusted Wikipedia which claimed that What Child is This? is told from the shepherds' POV as it claimed they are the ones asking the question. When I double-checked for scoring purposes, that isn't true. WCIT? mentions the  shepherds in the third person, so it can't be from their POV.

(AWHHOH also mentions the shepherds, but it's in second person, a back and forth question and answer session. The Shepherds sing, someone asks them a question and the shepherds respond. WCIT? doesn't quite read that way.)

I'm irritated at myself there. If I had taken ten seconds to sing the song to myself, I'd have remembered the "While shepherds watch are keeping" line.

The only solution here is to give everyone two points for that question, but in the case of a tie, I'm giving the edge to those who picked AWHHOH as one of their guesses. If there's still a tie after that, I'll have random.org pick a winner.

6. If St. Nicholas were alive today (or maybe he is!), how old would he be? (1 point)

He was born around 270 AD, making him between 1700 and 1800 years old.

7. Before his change of heart, how long had the Grinch suffered the Christmas celebrations of the Whos? (1 point)

According to the Grinch himself, "Why, for fifty-three years I've put up with it now!"

8. Mistletoe and holly are different plants. (1 point)

Yep. Mistletoe usually has white berries and rounded leaves. Holly has red berries and spiky leaves.

9. In the song The Twelve Days of Christmas, how many different kinds of non-human animals does the singer receive? (For the purposes of this question, a poodle and a beagle would be considered different "kinds.") (1 point)

Ah, this one was a tricky one! Please remember you all promised not to complain when I give the answer! The different kinds of animals are:

partridge
turtle dove
french hen
calling birds
geese
swans
whatever mammal the maid's a milkin' are a milkin' (probably a cow)

That's 7 kinds!

10. Why did Clark Griswold have trouble getting his outside Christmas lights to turn on? (1 point)

From the movie National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. He forgot to flip the switch that was connected to the outlet.

11. In the poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas," where does St. Nicholas put the gifts he brings with him? (1 point)

According to the narrator:

"He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,"

12. Which President included the message below on what (I believe) was the first official Presidential Christmas card? (1 point)

Calvin Coolidge

And now for the results!

First, I had to go in and grade the two part questions by hand. Google did not give you partial credit on those for getting one right, so I had to do it.

For the Joseph question, you got 1 point for each correct answer.

For the shepherds question, I gave everyone two points no matter what.

That means that for most of you, you actually earned more points than what Google told you when you submitted your form. If you want to know your updated score, send me a PM.

After all of that, there were three posters earned a top score of 12/14! They are Josie, Frenchconnection and Ulysses.

But only one of them picked Angels We Have Heard on High as one of the carols told from the point of view of the shepherds, giving that poster a slight edge and the win.

Congratulations, Ulysses! You are the winner of the 2018 Christmas contest! I'll send you a PM shortly with the code. Enjoy!

Thanks again to everyone for playing! I hope you had fun! I may not be around as much the next few days as I have Christmas celebrations with family and I want to spend a lot of time playing with my kids, but I'll be in and out. Happy Holidays to everyone and have a very safe New Year

Wow! I didn't really expect to win this thing. Thanks, Maestro, you rock.

Now, will the $5 gift certificate be good at Starbucks for a coffee in a "Season's Greetings" cup?

PS-Those maids could have been milking something other than an animal.

I will not enlarge upon that theory.

I'm not sure $5 would get a Starbucks coffee without the mug!
