When I was a Christian, other more elder Church members would often say " It's a personal relationship with Christ and not religion "

It's religion no matter how you spin it!   Wink

All throughout our American history, world history, "ordinary people can do extraordinary things"

Explain.

Christianity was a cult.. In 325AD it became a religion when Emperor Constantine "Romanized" Christianity and spread it at the tip of a spear.

Romanized Christianity is all that's left..

Except many do not accept Catholicism as the same as what the Disciples and Jesus, himself established.

It's pointless to debate, so I am not debating.  But I think the point to the thing is that religion's focus is on works.  Always.  If the focus is on an actual relationship with a living God, works are the result of that.  But not the raison d'etre.

By the time of Constantine, Christianity had already spread out of the Roman Empire to Ethiopia, South Asia, Armenia, and Central Asia.  From what we know of the Church of the East and the Jesus Sutras, Rome did not have the monopoly on Christianity that Catholics and the Orthodox claim it did.

But it was the Roman Empire where it really took off?

Especially after Constantine's Edict

In that case then how come that most priests don't do a thing?

FC,

I've been thinking about how I can respond conversationally without coming across as a total dick.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "took off".  Christianity certainly started in the Roman Empire.  But Ethiopia and Armenia both adopted Christianity as their state religion some time in the early 4th century, before it was made the state religion of the Roman Empire.  And at the time of Constantine's conversion, about a tenth of the Empire had already converted.
