Word™

I remember the genuine hope I felt with Obama stating on day one that he was closing Gitmo. Finally! Someone at the top who could put an end to our march down police-state lane. Step one in a series of upcoming changes to the criminal-justice system and our hostile foreign policy. As time passed and little changed I began to wonder, not just when, but if, any of this change would materialize. No doubt I assigned too much blame on the right and not enough on what some call the deep state, others the establishment, both being alternatives for what's objectively labeled the status quo. Eight years later Gitmo still open, troops still scattered across the globe and half the country still in a blood-lust for (((MOAR))).

Then along comes Trump.

This guy thinks he knows better than the generals AND he thinks we're too involved in the ME. A horrible person who just might do an extraordinary thing and not just slow the wheel, but break it. Instead, it appears he's gonna get run over.

The worst of both world's from my perspective.  Undecided

Double Word.

I defected to Ron Paul in '08 over this issue.  I came back for Obama because ... McCain? HAHAHA.  Might as well have been McCain.  At least the Democratic Party wouldn't have taken so much damage and compromised so many of it's already beleaguered principles.

Imperialism is the central driving force of American history.

Driving force of American history since 1945, rather, when we (or rather, some of our leaders) decided to replace the declining European powers as world rulers.

I still don't understand. What behind-the-scenes forces are keeping us in Syria?

This seems like such a no-brainer. Pulling out of this civil war should be the embodiment of "America First."

Read Que's post again.

Powerful people with vested interests are keeping us there, in short.

No.  They aren't.

This is the one thing the President has the authority to unilaterally do.  Hell we don't even have authorization from Congress to be there to begin with.

All he has to do is tell his commanders to "Pull the crappity smack out".  That's it.

He simply doesn't have the balls or the will to do it and his supporters that actually want him to pull out will blame anyone or anything but Trump for not following through.  Trump is not a victim of the crappity smacking deep state.  You tools simply won't hold him accountable for anything.

Watched it.  A shotgun is for long ranged shooting.  That is why hunters like them.  An AR-15 is not.  That video was misleading.

Much longer than that. Our movement west conquering and seizing territory from various Native American tribes, the Mexican-American War, the Spanish-American War, taking over Hawaii, various interventions in Central America (e.g., Panama), etc. is a long history of imperialism.

Among the "buttholes being puckered" over a US withdrawal would be the Kurdish militias we partnered with to eradicate ISIS.  They did the hard fighting on the ground while we supported them with air strikes and intel.  But Turkey has already told us that the minute we leave Syria, they will attack the Syrian kurds.  They consider them terrorists, not partners against ISIS.

So what do you think of these reports leaking out that the troop withdrawals in Syria have actually begun?

So does this mean a "deep state" really exists?

By the way, I think imperialism can be good. It can also be bad.

I'm glad we took the lands from the indians. I'm glad we took over Hawaii. Both "takeovers" worked out for the best, and we should have zero regrets or apologies.

That's true to an extent. However, the President also needs the cooperation of the bureaucracy to carry it out. DOD and State (as well as member of the administration) have been trying to prevent any withdrawal and are now trying to slow walk it.

In the past, there has been more common interest between the President and the bureaucracy regarding US foreign policy. Now, that doesn't necessarily exist, particularly since the President also doesn't seem to have clear, well defined views on these issues.
