Trump's trade deal was a small refinement of NAFTA, by any honest assessment.

The only good thing about it as at least it stripped the misnomer "NAFTA" from the trade deal.

But it is by and large a horrible deal that will make the problem wrought by NAFTA worse.  Hitting the poorest in Mexico ... again ... and leading to more foot soldiers for the cartels, and illegal immigration.

I thought he was using it to try to get Canada to concede so he could pivot to China with a "win."  I was actually surprised Mexico caved first.

But make no mistake, I would rather they all walked away from NAFTA and someone else negotiated an actual free trade deal further down the road.

I don't think either of these is entirely accurate.  Most of the time I see these narratives being pushed by journalists they are cherry picking.  Or when there's room for emphasizing variables they emphasize them all one way.

And now I'll flip your question around.  If Trump is the gifted negotiator he claims to be, why didn't he get the wall done in his first two years?

Fair question.  I'd probably chalk it up to the first two years spent in large part fighting the establishment wing of the Republicans as much as the Democrats, dealing with recalcitrant cabinet members like Tillerson and Mattis who outright admitted to countermanding his orders when he gave them, the Russia scandal, and the bizarre need for 60 votes to close debate on an issue in the Senate.

Yeah, that is why he has more money than you, and me too.

Or maybe his $400 million basically tax free inheritance played a part.  Roll Eyes

That's why ever person with a net worth of $400 million to $999 million immediately rockets into the billionaire bracket.   They don't even have to do anything, the government just gives them a bump when they hit $400 million.  It's part of an IRS proc ruling colloquially referred to as the "close enough" rule by those in the tax business.

That's why we have over 10 million millionaires in this country and only 540 billionaires.  Very few people know about the Close Enough Clause.  It's a checkmark on the Schedule E for passive income.

On top of that, Trump is now trying to get a reduced deal of the $25 billion he could have gotten last year.
