NH: Liberty Alliance fights to keep legislator salaries at $100/year

No, the headline is not missing any zeroes... New Hampshire lawmakers really do get paid just 100 dollars a year, plus mileage.

The New Hampshire Liberty Alliance is trying to keep it that way by opposing a proposed constitutional amendment that would open a path to increasing this amount.  This amendment would, in their view, threaten the state's tradition of a what amounts to an  all-volunteer legislature.

If you live in state you can contact the committee that will vote on this, at HouseLegislativeAdministration@leg.state.nh.us
I'm projecting that February 4th would be roughly the deadline for contacting them before they decide.

Does your state have an organization that tracks and fights nearly every anti-liberty (not just anti-Republican) move by your legislature? If not, move to NH where we do!

By making legislators "volunteers", NH is ensuring that only rich people can be legislators.  Or that legislators will be very easy to buy off by lobbyists.

I'd tell you, having lived there for two years, this is absolutely not true...in fact it's 180 degrees the opposite.

They must run a balanced budget meaning bills must pass on their own merit and they cannot go over budget...riders are pretty much non existent. Also, its only a part time legislature meaning most of the year they are not in session. Most all in state govt which is what this is about are common, regular working people...look them up and see what they do...they come from all walks of life. They only meet about 40 days annually...sometime a bit less..

many older retired people, people with some time..

but almost no lobbying in NH relative to place like RI with FT legislators..

Its a great model for limited, balanced budget gov't, without lobbyist influence.

Basically a bad idea.

That sort of "reform" was tried in San Francisco at the turn of the 19th/20th century.

The result was the impoverished elected officials fell easy prey to bribery, extortion, graft, etc. It turned into one of the most corrupt municipal governments in America. Only the earthquake of 1906 resolved the problem, because the collapse of the expensive new City Hall revealed the rot had extended to construction projects.

This reminds me of the arguments in the (salaried) Dallas City Council, where they said if residents didn't pay them more, they'd do corrupt things.   Having experienced both first hand, the NH legislature, representing a whole state, is a lot more transparent and accessible than the Dallas local government was.

Interesting model for a legislature.  Don't know how well it would work in more populous states with bigger economies and more potential for corruption, but if it works in NH then good for them.

Compare the states that pay their reps, and their level of cruelty and corruption...to that of NH.  And tell me how those states are superior again?   the first time i testified at the state house hearings ,  in 2004, I said something like "it's been my experience that when we do things one way in new hampshire, and everyone in the other states does it another way, we are right and they are WRONG."

Got a standing ovation...from the committee.  Althgouh... it was all down hilll after that lol.

So what. Nh has operated this way for decades and none of what you say happened in the early 1900s in one place has happened here in nh.

Facts and data and results seem to get completely lost on you.
