The thought of driverless cars, or even self-driving vehicles with a driver sitting behind the wheel, sharing the roads and highways with us scares me. It's becoming more and more prevalent with mayors okaying deals with the companies producing them, even though some deaths of pedestrians have been documented from these vehicles not recognizing their presence. Who knows what other "mishaps" have occurred that have not been publicized? I don't like it one bit. There are enough dangers out there already from inattentive, distracted,  and incapacitated live drivers. Why would anyone think this is a good idea?  Undecided

Eventually it will be a very good idea. Maybe very soon.

Eventually it will mean far fewer deaths per year on roads. Probably would already.

Eventually people will wonder how they ever allowed just any idiot to drive around at 70 mph.

If FaceBook memes and twitter accounts can sway elections, then either accept it as the new reality or let's figure out a new form of government. Because democracy is therefore unfit in the modern age.

Like any technology it needs improvement.

Maybe. That remains to be seen. But they're out there now, and, as Abe points out, they're still not perfected. I hope they're well labeled so I know if I'm close to one.

I understand your fear, but I think you need to weigh the pros and cons.

Imagine a world with no drunk drivers. No tickets. No traffic. No road rage. Imagine waking up to go to work, and your car is waiting out front, warm on a cold morning, with your coffee it picked up at Starbucks and a paper it picked up at the grocery store. Imagine never having to look for a parking spot again, and getting valet service at any venue you choose to go to. Imagine never worrying about falling asleep at the wheel again, or sending your child to visit their grandparent's house in another state by themselves. Or picking your kids up from school, driving them to soccer, then to their friend's house, and then home, all with you tracking the entire experience, with video surveillance and communication through your phone.

How about no old people driving on the road ever again, yet those same old people having total freedom to safely go anywhere they want.

The biggest danger of cars is the fact the people drive them. The reaction time of a computer is vastly superior to a human's. They have landed our space shuttles and our airplanes, and once the technology is fully developed, will be  safer than any human.

This technology cannot come soon enough for me.

Adoption will be driven by insurance.  Driverless cars will be involved in fewer accidents by an order of magnitude.  Insurance rates for them will drop accordingly.  If average auto insurance is $1k/year, and driverless brings that down by half or more, that's going to make it expensive to keep driving your own car.

Ubering will be cheaper, trucking will be cheaper -- this is just where the market is going.

I'm betting it will be trucking that drives this. The cost savings at not having to pay truckers to deliver long-haul goods, coupled to the decreased time it will take to deliver those goods, will make autonomous trucks highly appealing to companies like UPS, FedEx and Amazon. They have the money to fully develop this technology.

I am fully aware that truckers will lose their jobs. I am not happy about it, but hard to see an alternative.
