INTRODUCTION

This post contained all verses or passages that mention the shape of the earth. Each verse will contain analysis and extra links for more information. There will be Hebrew and Greek lexicon definitions supplied at the end of this post as well as Jerome's 4th century Latin Vulgate supplied with many verses listed here. Some words from the early church fathers will be included. Each verse that contains an English translation will be represented either by the translation that renders it best, or a list of translations that translated it correctly as lexicons support.

馃寧33 Globe Earth Verses in The Bible

1. 馃寧1 Samuel 2:8,

"He reyseth vp the poore out of the duste, and lyfteth vp the begger from the dong hill: to set them among princes, and to enheret them with the seate of glory. For the pyllers of the earth are the Lordes, and he hath set the rounde worlde vpon them" (Strong's H8398: 转旨值讘值诇 t锚b锚l -- 1537 Matthew-Tyndale Bible).

"He reyseth vp the poore out of the dust, and lyfteth vp the begger from the dong hyll: to sett them amonge princes, and to enherett them with the seate of glorye. For the pillers of the erth are the lordes, and he hath sett the rounde worlde vpon them" (1539 Great Bible).

"Raising up the weak from the dust, he will raise up the needy from the dung-hill to sit with the noble, and he will cause them to inherit a throne of glory, for to Jehovah the castings of the earth, and he will put the habitable globe upon them" (1876 Julia E. Smith Bible).

馃摉Latin Vulgate: 馃憠 "suscitat de pulvere egenum et de stercore elevat pauperem ut sedeat cum principibus et solium gloriae teneat Domini enim sunt cardines terrae et posuit super eos orbem"

The "pillars" of the earth" in this verse represent the saints.

2. 馃寧Job 26:7,

"He stretches out the North over empty space,
and suspends the earth over nothing at all" (NAB).

"He stretches out the north over the void
and hangs the earth on nothing" (ESV).

"He stretched out the north over the empty space, and hangeth the earth upon nothing" (Douay-Rheims Bible).

"He stretched oute the north ouer the emptie, & hangeth the earth vpon nothinge" (1537 Matthew's Bible).

"He stretches out the north over empty space,
He hangs the earth upon nothing" (MEV).

"Which God stretchith forth the north on voide thing, and hangith the erthe on nouyt" (1382 Wycliffe Bible).

"He stretches out the north over empty space;
He hangs the earth on nothing" (NKJV).

"He stretches the north over chaos
and suspends the earth on nothing" (Complete Jewish Bible).

Flavius Josephus (37-100 A.D.) Alludes to Job 26:7

鈥淎fter this, on the second day, he placed the heaven over the whole world, and separated it from the other parts; and he determined it should stand by itself. He also placed a crystalline [firmament] round it, and put it together in a manner agreeable to the earth, and fitted it for giving moisture and rain, and for affording the advantage of dews鈥 (Antiquity 1:30).

"...and he determined it should stand by itself" is a reference to Job 26:7.

Clement of Rome (A.D, 35 - 99) Alludes to Job 26:7

鈥淭hus, by His transcendent might He established the heavens, and by His incomprehensible understanding He ordered them: the earth He separated from the water now encircling it, and firmly grounded it on the unshakable foundation of His own will鈥 (33:3).

"...and firmly grounded it on the unshakable foundation of His own will鈥 is a reference to Job 26:7.

This verse is listed as a globe earth verse because it can only correspond to a globe. For more information see link below.

3.馃寧 Job 26:10,

Clement of Rome (A.D, 35 - 99),

"Day and night complete the revolution ordained by Him, and neither interferes in the least with the other" (20: 2).

It seems clear enough to me that he is reading from the Book of Job chapter 26 verse 10.

St.Augustine (354-430 A.D.)

It is very clear that Augustine believed in a spherical earth. The following citation is taken from Augustine鈥檚 book The Literal Meaning of Genesis, Vol.1. (Ancient Christian Writers, Vol.41).

鈥淏ut if the light first created enveloped the earth on all sides, whether it was motionless or travelling round, it could not be followed anywhere by night, because it did not vacate any place to make room for night. But was it made on one side, so that as it travelled it would permit the night to follow after from the other? Although water still covered all the earth, there was nothing to prevent the massive watery sphere from having day on one side by the presence of light, and on the other side, night by the absence of light. Thus, in the evening, darkness would pass to that side from which light would be turning to the other鈥 (p.33).

4. 馃寧Job 22:14.

"Thick clouds cover Him, so that He cannot see,
And He walks above the circle of heaven" (NKJV -- H2329 讞讜旨讙 ch没wg).

"Thick clouds are His covering, so He cannot see;
and He walks above the circle of heaven" (MEV).

馃摉Latin Vulgate: 馃憠 "nubes latibulum eius nec nostra considerat et circa cardines caeli perambulat"

5. 馃寧Job 37:12,

"Being turned by his guidance to their doing all that he commanded them upon the face of the habitable globe of the earth" (Strong's H2015 讛指驻址讱职 h芒phak, H4524 诪值住址讘 m锚莽ab, H8398 转旨值讘值诇 t锚b锚l, H776 讗侄专侄抓 始erets -- 1876 Julia E. Smith Bible).

Job 37:12 speaks about the global weather system much like what what we read in Ecclesiastes 1:6. There are four major Hebrew words used in Job 37:12 which, when all used together in this verse, very clearly describe a globe.

馃摉Latin Vulgate: 馃憠 "quae lustrant per circuitum quocumque eas voluntas gubernantis duxerit ad omne quod praeceperit illis super faciem orbis terrarum"

"The sprynges of waters were sene, and the foundacyons of the rounde worlde were discouered at thy chidynge (O Lorde) at the blastynge and breth of thy displeasures" (1537 Matthew's Bible).

"The sprynges of waters were sene, & the foundacions of the round worlde were discouered at thy chydinge, O Lorde, at the blastynge of the breth of thy displeasure" (1539 Great Bible).

"And the bottomes of waters appeared, and the foundations of the rounde worlde were discouered at thy chidyng, O God: at the blast of the breath of thine anger" (1568 Bishop's Bible).

"And the channels of waters will be seen, and the foundations of the habitable globe will be uncovered from thy rebuke, O Jehovah, from the breathing of the spirit of thine anger" (1876 Julia E. Smith Bible).

8.馃寧Romans.10:18,

English: 馃憠 "But I say, Have they not heard? Surely, in all the earth went out their sound, and their words to the end of the habitable globe" (1876 Julia Smith Bible).

The first clause: "But I say, Have they not heard?" alludes to Isaiah 40:21,

"Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth?"

The second clause follows the first clause of Isaiah 40:21 but quotes from Psalm 19:4 instead of Isaiah 40:22.

There are two Greek words in Romans 10:18 which are translated from the Hebrew H776 讗侄专侄抓 始erets & H8398 转旨值讘值诇 t锚b锚l. The words are G1093 纬峥 g膿, & G3625 慰峒拔何肯呂坚匠谓畏 oikoum茅n膿, used as Greek equivalents to H776 讗侄专侄抓 始erets & H8398 转旨值讘值诇 t锚b锚l.

11.馃寧Psalm 93:1,

"he hath made the rounde worlde so sure, that it can not be moued" (1535 Coverdale Bible).

"The Lorde is kyng, and hath put on glorious apparell, the Lorde hath put on his apparell, & gyrded him selfe with strengthe: he hath made the rounde world so sure, that it can not be moued" (1537 Matthew's Bible).

"he hath made the rounde worlde so sure, that it can not be moued" (1539 Great Bible).

"God raigneth, he is clothed with a glorious maiestie, God is clothed with strength: he hath girded hym selfe, he hath made the worlde so sure that it can not be moued" (1568 Bishop's Bible).

"Jehovah reigned, he put on majesty: Jehovah put on strength, he girded himself: also the habitable globe shall be prepared, it shall not be moved" (1876 Julia E. Smith Bible).

What does "that it can not be moued" mean? 4th century explains the phrase which is an expression that goes with Job 26:7.

St.Ambrose (337-397 A.D.)

鈥淗ow the disposition of the earth therefore depends upon the power of God, you may learn also where it is written: 鈥楬e looketh upon the earth and maketh it tremble,鈥 and elsewhere: 鈥極ne again I move the earth.鈥 Therefore, the earth remains immovable not by its balances, but is moved frequently by the nod and free will of God, as Job, too, says: 鈥楾he Lord shaketh it from its foundations, and the pillars thereof tremble.鈥 And elsewhere: 鈥楬ell is naked before him and there is no covering for death. He stretched out the north over the empty space and hangeth the earth upon nothing. He bindeth up the waters in his clouds. The pillars of heaven fled away and are in dread at his rebuke. By his power the seas are calmed, by his wisdom is struck down the sea-monster, and the gates of heaven fear him.鈥
By the will of God, therefore, the earth remains immovable. 鈥楾he earth standeth for ever,鈥 according to Ecclesiastes, yet is moved and nods according to the will of God. It does not therefore continue to exist because based on its own foundation. It does not stay stable because based on its own props. The Lord established it by the support of His will, because 鈥榠n his hand are all the ends of the earth.鈥 The simplicity of this faith is worth all the proffered proofs.
Let others hold approvingly that the earth never will fall, because it keeps its position in the midst of the world in accordance with nature. They maintain that it is from necessity that the earth remains in its place and is not inclined in another direction, as long as it does not move contrary to nature but in accordance with it. Let them take occasion to magnify the excellence of their divine Artist and eternal Craftsman. What artist is not indebted to Him? 鈥榃ho gave to women the knowledge of weaving or the understanding of embroidery?鈥 However, I who am unable to comprehend the excellence of His majesty and His art do not entrust myself to theoretical weights and measures. Rather, I believe that all things depend on His will, which is the foundation of the universe and because of which the world endures up to the present鈥 (St.Ambrose, "Hexameron" The Fathers Of The Church series translated by John J. Savage, pp.22-23).

"gyre in Science

A spiral oceanic surface current driven primarily by the global wind system and constrained by the continents surrounding the three ocean basins (Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian). Each ocean basin has a large gyre in the subtropical region, centered around 30掳 north and south latitude. Smaller gyres occur at 50掳 north latitude in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The direction of a gyre's rotation is determined by the prevailing winds in the region, with the large subtropical gyres rotating clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere."

Right off the bat I found "sphere, globe, horizon, round."

Going to the original Websters dictionary for the definition of circle.
http://webstersdictionary1828.com/Dictionary/Circle?fbclid=IwAR3wh5JjTsXTSKdvVVp...

It says: "2. In popular use, the line that comprehends the figure, the plane or surface comprehended, and the whole body or solid matter of a round substance, are denominated a circle; a ring; an orb; the earth."

An orb. Lets see what an orb is in English
http://webstersdictionary1828.com/Dictionary/orb?fbclid=IwAR1zXlk8NbIAEMqHIDF4ja...

So an orb describes a sphere or a globe.

The English definition of globe
http://webstersdictionary1828.com/Dictionary/globe?fbclid=IwAR02ISAhavWJEZmV8Fzd...

"GLOBE, verb transitive To gather round or into a circle."

The English Definition of sphere
http://webstersdictionary1828.com/Dictionary/sphere?fbclid=IwAR2ef4cRRXT3HYb1WTf...

"3. An orbicular body, or a circular figure representing the earth or apparent heavens."

"4. Circuit of motion; revolution; orbit; as the diurnal sphere."

Strong's H2329, "circle" and "circuit" 鉁呪渽

The English definition of round
http://webstersdictionary1828.com/Dictionary/round?fbclid=IwAR0urnCG0Zne1_wHqEUx...

"1. Cylindrical; circular; spherical or globular. round is applicable to a cylinder as well as to a globe or sphere. We say, the barrel of a musket is round; a ball is round; a circle is round."

The English definition of circular
http://webstersdictionary1828.com/Dictionary/Circular?fbclid=IwAR3VKX-ft3pxN3DdW...

"1. In the form of a circle; round; circumscribed by a circle; spherical; as, the sun appears to be circular."

The definition of circuit
http://webstersdictionary1828.com/Dictionary/Circuit?fbclid=IwAR2214ZTmNpC5_sBwh...

"1. The act of moving or passing round; as the periodical circuit of the earth round the sun, or of the moon round the earth."

So the Hebrew word chuwg means the earth is circular as a sphere is circular. The word circuit means the earth moves!

English definition of compass
http://webstersdictionary1828.com/Dictionary/compass?fbclid=IwAR1iaNTeJ2_vPw4jAw...

"COMPASS, verb transitive

1. To stretch round; to extend so as to embrace the whole; hence, to inclose, encircle, grasp or seize; as, to compass with the arms."

Now lets look at synonyms for sphere
https://www.thesaurus.com/browse/sphere?fbclid=IwAR3Ce4DG1Z21pXLgrHMiu-sI4YLxB6s...

Circle is a synonym for sphere.

Synonyms for orb
https://www.thesaurus.com/browse/orb?fbclid=IwAR30mLJBpBDoyCHOkd09i6cym-U47g1BXO...

It says "sphere, ball, circle, round."

So it is very clear there is more than one application for the word circle. The application that best fits Proverbs 8:27 and Isaiah 40:22 is globe/sphere/orb.

Here is 4th century Bishop Ambrose reading from Isaiah 40:22.

"And further on: 'Who sitteth upon the globe of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as locusts, who stretcheth out the heavens as an arch?' Who, then, ventures to put his knowledge in the same plane with that of God?鈥 (St.Ambrose, "Hexameron" The Fathers Of The Church series translated by John J. Savage, p.231).

鈥淚t will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed. On that day no one who is on the roof of his house, with goods inside, should go down to get them. I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left鈥 (NIV84).

Jesus returns with a multitude of angels who surround the earth. On one side of the world it will be day, and on the other side it will be night! 33.馃寧Matthew 4:8

馃憠 "Again, the devil takes him into a very high mount, and shows him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory" (Matt.4:8 - 1876 Julia Smith Bible, G2889 魏峤瓜兾嘉肯 k贸smos).

馃憠 "And the devil, bringing him into a high mountain, shewed him all the kingdoms of the habitable globe in an instant of time" (Luke 4:5 - 1876 Julia Smith Bible, G3625 慰峒拔何肯呂坚匠谓畏 oikoum茅n膿).

The only difference in these two verses is that Matthew applied the word G2889 魏峤瓜兾嘉肯 k贸smos whereas Luke used G3625 慰峒拔何肯呂坚匠谓畏 oikoum茅n膿. Both verses tell us the same account. So is this a case of hyperbole? I don't think so...not in this account. Luke 4:5 is a very clear globe earth verse. I think Matt.4:8 is using k贸smos in the same manner Luke used oikoum茅n膿. For the battle of souls was then and is now a global battle.

鉁匱he New Strong's Exhaustive Expanded Concordance of the Bible. H8398

"8398. t锚b锚l, tay-bale'; from H2986; the earth (as moist and therefore inhabited); by extension, the globe; by implication, its inhabitants; specifically, a particular land, as Babylonia, Palestine:鈥攚orld [35x] habitable part, [1x].

The word signified, first, the solid material on which man dwells, and that was formed, founded, established, and disposed by God; and secondly, the inhabitants thereof. See TWOT 835h; BDB--385c, 1061d."

鉁 Gesenius' Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon
https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?t=kjv&strongs=h8398&fbc...

鉁匱heological Wordbook of the Old Testament.

TWOT 835h 转旨值讘值诇 t锚b锚l, tay-bale'; world.

"This noun is used in three basic situations. First, the noun is employed to represent the global mass called earth, including the atmosphere or heavens (cf. Ps.89:12; II Sam 22:16; et al.). t锚b锚l is often in parallelism or apposition with 'eres (I Sam 2:8; Isa.26:9; 34:1; et al.) when 'eres is used in its broadest sense of "the world." The "world" was created by God, not false gods (Jer.10:12; Ps.93:1) and it belongs solely to him (Ps.24:1). God's eternality is illustrated by his existence before the creation of "world" (Ps.90:2) and his wisdom (perhaps a personification of Christ) was present prior to the world's creation (Prov. 8:26, 31). Creation itself gives a "worldwide" witness to God's glory (Ps.19:4 [H 5]) which should result in Yahweh's praise (Ps.98:2). Yahweh will judge this "world," making it empty (Isa.24:4), though in the millennium God will cause Israel to blossom and fill the whole world with her fruit (Isa.27:6).

Second, t锚b锚l is sometime limited to "countries" or "the inhabitable world." This meaning is more closely related to the root meaning. It refers to the world where crops are raised. This is observed in the judgment message against the king of Babylon (not Satan) for violently shaking the "world" or "inhabitable world" (Isa.13:11; 14:17). Lightning is said to enlighten the "world"---undoubtedly referring to a limited land area (Ps.77:18 [H 19]; 97:4).

Third, t锚b锚l may also refer to the inhabitants living upon the whole earth. This is demonstrated by the parallelism of t锚b锚l with I' umim (Ps.9:8 [H 9]) and 'ammim (Ps.96:13; 98:9). The context of these references is Yahweh's judgment upon the world's inhabitants---a judgment both executed in righteousness and instructive of Yahweh's righteousness (Isa.26:9; 34:1).

In several passages the sense of t锚b锚l as the globular earth in combination with its inhabitants is clearly observed. Everything belongs to Yahweh as his creation (Ps.50:12). Yahweh alone controls this world (Job 34:13; Nah 1:5) and his power is over all the earth which always responds to his presence (Job 37:12; Ps.97:4)".

鉁匩ew International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology & Exegesis, Volume 4:

"9315. t锚b锚l 转旨值讘值诇 Nom. fem., world (#9315).

OT Found 36x exclusively in poetic texts, the word conveys the cosmic or global sense in which 'eres is also sometimes used; i.e., the whole earth or world considered as a single entity. It sometimes occurs in parallelism with 'eres (Jer.10:12; Lam.4:12). Twice it is used together with 'eres, either to express "the whole earth" (Job 37:12), or perhaps in the sense of the inhabited earth (Prov.8:31). It is used frequently in contexts that associate it with Yahweh's creative act and that, as a result, express the stability or durability of the earth (1 Sam.2:8; Ps.89:11 [12]; 93:1; 96:10). It is used when the whole population of the world is referred to (Ps.24:1; 33:8; 98:7; Isa. 18:3; 26:9; Nah.1:5). Isaiah uses t锚b锚l more than any other prophet, mostly in the context of universal judgment (Isaiah 13:11; 24:4; 34:1; cf. Ps.96:13; 98:9).

Land, earth: --> damd (ground, piece of land, soil, realm of the earth, #141); --> 'eres (earth, land, #824); --> t锚b锚l (world, #9315)."

鉁匱he New Strong's Exhaustive Expanded Concordance of the Bible, G1093 纬峥 g膿,

"纬峥 g膿, ghay; contracted from a primary word; soil; by extension a region, or the solid part or the whole of the terrene globe (including the occupants in each application):鈥攃ountry, earth(-ly), ground, land, world."

G1093 纬峥 g膿 is the Greek equivalent to the Hebrew H776 讗侄专侄抓 始erets.

鉁匱he New Strong's Exhaustive Expanded Concordance of the Bible, G3625 慰峒拔何肯呂坚匠谓畏 oikoum茅n膿

"慰峒拔何肯呂坚匠谓畏 oikoum茅n膿, oy-kou-men'-ay; feminine participle present passive of G3611 (as noun, by implication, of G1093); land, i.e. the (terrene part of the) globe; specially, the Roman empire:鈥攅arth, world."

The terrene part of the globe is the land occupied by its inhabitants. Sometimes oikoum茅n膿 only refers to a region, like the Roman Empire. Matthew 24:14 is in context with the whole earth and its inhabitants. G3625 慰峒拔何肯呂坚匠谓畏 oikoum茅n膿 is the Greek equivalent to the Hebrew H8398 转旨值讘值诇 t锚b锚l.

鉁匱he New Strong's Exhaustive Expanded Concordance of the Bible, G2889 魏峤瓜兾嘉肯 k贸smos

"魏峤瓜兾嘉肯 k贸smos, kos'-mos; probably from the base of G2865; orderly arrangement, i.e. decoration; by implication, the world (in a wide or narrow sense, including its inhabitants, literally or figuratively (morally)):鈥攁dorning, world."
https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?page=4&strongs=G2889&t=...

The word k贸smos is where we get the English word cosmos from. So right from the start flat earthers lose their position that the cosmos don't exist. But the broader question is what this has to do with the shape of the earth?

The Thayer's Greek Lexicon provides a list which shows the various applications for the word k贸smos as applied in the NT:

"1. an apt and harmonious arrangement or constitution, order, government

2. ornament, decoration, adornment, i.e. the arrangement of the stars, 'the heavenly hosts', as the ornament of the heavens. 1 Pet. 3:3

3. the world, the universe

4. the circle of the earth, the earth

5. the inhabitants of the earth, men, the human family

6. the ungodly multitude; the whole mass of men alienated from God, and therefore hostile to the cause of Christ

7.world affairs, the aggregate of things earthly
A. the whole circle of earthly goods, endowments riches, advantages, pleasures, etc, which although hollow and frail and fleeting, stir desire, seduce from God and are obstacles to the cause of Christ

8. any aggregate or general collection of particulars of any sort
a. the Gentiles as contrasted to the Jews (Rom. 11:12 etc)
b. of believers only, John 1:29; 3:16; 3:17; 6:33; 12:47 1 Cor. 4:9; 2 Cor. 5:19"

"Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" (2 Cor. 3:17).

Very nice!

"Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the Christian religion, whose morality is so sublime and pure (and) which insures to the good eternal happiness, are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments."

Thanks Seawolf. I was also able to post this on Christiansforums as well, so I'm trying hard to spread the truth about what the Bible teaches on the shape of the earth. Flat earthers are just atheists preaching evolution theory in Christ name. Both Hitler and Jim Jones did the same thing.

Flat earthers?  Huh You go to a great and confusing length to prove something that is self-evident beyond any reasonable doubt. The earth is round. Period. Only idiots would or could think otherwise.

I agree with you 100%. While you will find many people online who tackle the issue from a perspective of modern science, I chose to keep my focus solely on the Biblical teachings. I wanted to stop writing about this and move on to a new study, but flat earthers won't give up the heresy and continue to push even after they are stripped of all their authority. So I decided I'm gonna put two more years into all this and go into phase 2 of this study. I pretty much knew from the start that I'd end up doing this until 2020. Because the whole flat earth movement is a radically militant atheist movement that preaches evolution theory in Jesus' name with the goal of causing enough apostasy in the Christian faith to get a Democrat elected in 2020 so they and force their brutal Socialism on everyone.

I meant "mad" in the English sense, not the American.

In general, quoting very old translations is a very bad idea:

1. Many old translations are only partially from the original 3 languages of the Bible: Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic.  Older translations often rely on Latin.  Adding an intermediate language makes an accurate translation more difficult, sort of like the children's game of Telephone.

2. Manuscript scholarship has improved dramatically in the last 500 years.  There's a much better sense of what the books said in their original languages in their originally-finished form.

3. Biblical language scholarship has improved drastically in the last 500 years.  We have a much better sense of what meanings the original languages were trying to convey to their contemporary audiences.  In an encouraging development, the study of ancient Hebrew has a lot of Christian-Jewish dialogue, and Christians have incorporated Jewish scholarship into their Hebrew knowledge.

4. The English language has changed quite a bit since the 1500s.  Words meanings have shifted; pronunciations and spellings have changed.
