Endless War And The Iran Obsession

...The airstrikes over the weekend serve as a reminder that tensions between the U.S. and Iran remain high and the crisis created by the administration’s Iran policy has not ended. U.S. forces in Iraq are at greater risk today than they were before the U.S. reneged on the JCPOA and began waging economic war on Iran. It is also a reminder that the ongoing U.S. military presence in Iraq is quite unpopular and will only become more unpopular when it is used to carry the feud with Iran onto Iraqi territory. The U.S. is still far too involved militarily in both Iraq and Syria, and these strikes threaten to pull the U.S. in deeper by feeding a cycle of tit-for-tat attacks in a country where the U.S. has few interests at stake. Our military presence in these countries has become self-justifying: we maintain a military presence and increase it in order to defend it from attacks that wouldn’t happen if our forces withdrew. That puts U.S. military personnel at risk for no good reason. The latest airstrikes can’t be separated from the context of complete policy failure that has led to them...

One reason that the U.S. is endlessly at war in that part of the world is that our government keeps looking for excuses to have U.S. forces where they are not needed or wanted.

Violent protests erupt around U.S. Embassy in Baghdad after U.S. air strikes

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Protesters and militia fighters enraged by U.S. air strikes on Iraq staged a violent demonstration outside the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday, torching a security post and hurling stones as security forces and embassy guards hit back with stun grenades and tear gas.

Iraqi officials said the ambassador and other staff had been evacuated, but this could not be confirmed with American officials.

In Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump accused Iran of orchestrating the violence and said Tehran would be held responsible...

SecDef Esper Warns Iran: US May Take ‘Preemptive Action’

PENTAGON: In what appears to be a return to the Bush Doctrine, the United States will consider launching preemptive strikes on Iran to stop what it says are months of attacks on US forces and facilities in Iraq and the Middle East, Defense Secretary Mark Esper says.

The warning came this morning during an off-camera meeting with reporters at the Pentagon, where Esper said there are indications Iran may be planning more attacks on the US and its interests in the region. “We will take preemptive action as well to protect American forces and protect American lives,” he said. “The game has changed, and we’re prepared to do what is necessary to defend our personnel and our interests and our partners in the region...”

The other threads seem to be dying down now, but the justifications for the recent strikes are falling apart.

For example, we had intelligence the Hezbollah attacks on the base were not intended to hit U.S. military personnel: "U.S. intelligence officials monitoring communications between Hezbollah and Soleimani's Guard learned that the Iranians wanted to keep the pressure on the Americans but had not intended to escalate the low-level conflict. The rockets landed in a place and at a time when U.S. and Iraqi personnel normally were not there, and it was only by unlucky chance that Hamid was killed, U.S. officials said." (Source)

DOD Sec. Esper is saying he saw no intelligence about imminent or planned attacks on U.S. embassies: 'On CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Defense Secretary Mark Esper said he “didn’t see” evidence of an Iranian plan to attack four U.S. embassies. But he said he “share(s) the president’s view that probably — my expectation was they were going to go after our embassies. The embassies are the most prominent display of American presence in a country.”' (Source)

And Pompeo doesn't seem to know what imminent means: "I don't know exactly which minute. We don't know exactly which day it would have been executed, but it was very clear: Qassem Soleimani himself was plotting a broad, large-scale attack against American interests, and those attacks were imminent." (Source)

This is why it is important that Congress reasserts its war powers rather than letting the President do whatever he wants willy-nilly.

Turns out Trump gave the go-ahead on Soleimani's assassination months ago.

Quote:
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump authorized the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani seven months ago if Iran's increased aggression resulted in the death of an American, according to five current and former senior administration officials.

The presidential directive in June came with the condition that Trump would have final signoff on any specific operation to kill Soleimani, officials said.

[...]

U.S. intelligence officials have closely tracked Soleimani's movements for years. When Trump came into office, Pompeo, who was Trump's first CIA director, urged the president to consider taking a more aggressive approach to Soleimani after showing him new intelligence on what a second senior administration official described as "very serious threats that didn't come to fruition."

An imminent attack!  Shocked

Bush designated him a Terrorist in 2005.  This made him a legitimate target.  Obama negotiator's actually sat down with him during their 'negotiations'.  He was a target of opportunity and this may be the first opportunity we had to take him out, since until recently he kept himself out of the limelight.  Even when he flew he filled his plane with innocent human shields.  This attack after he left his plane and before he ' went to hole' was brilliant.  Perhaps, President Trump's apparent weakness in not responding to Iran's multiple recent attacks until an American was killed, made this designated Terrorist overconfident and he took a foolish chance coming to Iraq to lead his forces.
