I would be fine,  We had libraries that we walked to as a family.  Movies that we walked to as a family (no car).  We even walked to Velvet Freeze to get an ice cream cone.  We had "refrigerators with no freezers in them except a small container to make ice cubes in.  We used fans for moving the air around in the summer when it was so beastly hot.  We had a washer machine with a ringer that squeezed the water out of the clothes and then hung the clothes to dry on the clothes line hanging out doors.  In the winter it hung in the basement to try.  Wet clothes don't dry on the line outside when it's cold outside.  We had the radio on all day.  We got a morning and an evening newspaper every day.  We ate our meals together sitting at the dining room table.  Wen I would say that I was bored sometimes, Mom would tell me I could dust the furniture or wash the dishes or whatever.  I stopped telling her I was bored and went and read a book.

It basically was a good life, except for something that happened (a reference to the words used by the freshman congresswoman to describe 9-11) that was started by a man name Adolph Hitler.  Our "something" was WWII.   But we still had our radio, newspapers, comic books, etc   not as many daddys, though.

Yep, we don't really need the other junk to have a good life.  It's the people that make a life worth living, imo, of course.

Well, believe it or not, there was a time when cars didn't have computers. Not even microprocessors in their radios.

Same for refrigerators and freezers and air conditioning and washing machines. Even TV's for about 10 years were basically analog devices.

But thanks for the flash back.

Sort of like the 1930's.

Would it be OK?

Would we be happier?

I lived in that world.  What you don’t know is not an inconvenience.  Just like all progress, we can’t seem to live without it, once we have it

I remember my dad telling me when I was a teen-ager that he was so lucky to be born when he was because he had seen so many inventions.  I think of him a lot during the day, because he would have loved a pc, a cell phone, anything that would bring information to him.  He was one of those men who was very quiet, didn't talk a whole lot, but I realized that when he did speak, others listened; except, of course my brother and I.   Smiley

Exactly!

I was using a typewriter when I was still in grade school (my Mom had an old Underwood in a spare room that she let us use). I was typing out copy on ditto paper for little newsletters in high school. Some friends and I even started a humor magazine, all hand typed. There was only one edition but it's a classic, LOL.

Around 1983 I got a job at a private medical research company, and it coincided with me taking night school classes in computer electronics. I actually wanted to learn about audio electronics, but a lot of curriculum was shared (basic electrical theory). When my employer got an IBM PC-AT, he learned I was taking these classes and put me in charge of networking it with other computers. That led to a 20 year career in IT.

But I still would like to learn more about classic audio electronics Wink.

Of course this is all hypothetical, unlikely if not impossible. We can't really turn back the clock on computer technology. Except... I remember reading articles back in the 90's about the possibility of a nuclear conflict that involved detonating powerful weapons high in the atmosphere that would create huge electromagnetic bursts. These would leave old non-computerized systems unaffected (like cars made before 1960), but would fry microprocessors over a vast area. It would also disable electrical grids. It would be an effective way to neutralize an enemy with minimal bloodshed (save for all the lives that might depend on computer electronics).

So... it could happen, but if things get that bad, we have a lot of other worries, too. It wouldn't make me happier.

In the spirit of the other thread:

"Wringer".  Not "ringer".

Whilst I'm being pedantic,  "Adolf", not "Adolph", and clothes dry just fine when it's cold outdoors so long as there's a breeze and it doesn't freeze.

I feel strangely better and worse at the same time....

I have a new t shirt.
