Bit of personal history...

Print Post
...I'm sat in a pub called the Coburn with some friends.

We're around 250 yards from where a Nazi V1 bomb destroyed my grandfather's house,  precipitating his permanent move from London and the establishment of the branch of our family which led to me.

I walked past the 1960s houses shoehorned in to the gap blown in 1944 earlier.

Interesting.

Now I'm not saying that Hitler was good, but my lovely children-indeed, my Dad - is a direct result of his pesky antics.

Um, if your grandfather had failed to seek shelter during that attack... you might not be here at all... thanks to Herr Hitler...

PS-To where did he relocate? I seem to recall mention of Wales... correct?

My Dad was there with your parents (stationed at Boxsted) helping you guys to save the world for democracy.  His experiences had an impact on my life as did those of my Mom (her finance was also a pilot, who didn't make home; my Dad was shot down and became a POW and he came back).

Far too many people today don't know the sacrifices made by our parent's generation.  It makes for a whole lot of cheap talk about things so many paid a very large price for and so many paid the ultimate price).

And don't forget all the American heroes who spent their war years in service to their country avoiding STD's despite potentially very painful heels.

Indeed.

Something Grandad used to say now makes sense. He said he moved to Big Wales.

All the streets around Mile End tube are named after Welsh towns; Little Wales.

I see. I know little of Wales. But back in the 70's I worked in a lab with some UK postdocs. One of them lived in Cardiff, although she was quite English. She was also rather short and busty, and she used to make slightly off color references to "Bristols"... Bristol is sort of close to Wales, is it not?

PS-Bristol as slang for nipple is not common in America... I only got it because I was an avid Monty Python fan. Oh, and the way she would say it.

There's not much between Bristol and Wales except an estuary.

Just in case you need the accuracy, the locals pronounce it as Brizzle, and 'Bristols' is fairly archaic slang for the whole mammary gland, as a unit, not just the pointy bit at the end.
