In other words, it's not an accident. If France wasn't a secular nation, the cathedral wouldn't have burned to the ground. That about sum it up?

Was Your Lady watching over the people working in,  visiting and passing by the Cathedral?

Among the relics inside Notre Dame Cathedral: "Pieces of the cross they believe that Jesus was crucified on, as well as part of the thorned crown that he had, as well as one of the nails from the crucifixion; their status is unknown right now." https://cbsn.ws/2UYj4mY

I suppose so.  Why do you ask?

Obviously, I'm not really partial to that theory, since we can see evidence of accidental fires in churches throughout history, including when nations were not "secular." Sometimes sh*t just happens.

It just seems a bit of a cruel thing to break the hearts of those who actually worship there, and without doubt love the place, in order to punish those who don't worship there and just don't care as much.

At least there was nobody martyred.

Here's another church disaster,  from my home town:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_John_the_Baptist%27s_Church,_Chester

1570 or thereabouts if memory serves. Second or third time it fell.

My own parish church had a similar event in Victorian days.

Incidentally,  Rev. Chesters, Rector,  is one of the nicest people I have ever met and a fount of knowledge about history (especially but not exclusively Church history).

Sure.  There are accidents without any deeper meaning.

But this building is a symbol of Christendom, probably more than any other building in the world.

Its burning on the eve of Easter, at a time when the Catholic Church is reaping the full fruits of abandoning its tradition with Vatican II, cannot be a mere coincidence.

So I guess the problem is French, but also goes beyond France.  The Catholic Church, which was at the heart of French civilization for most of the last two millenia, is in a state of collapse, in France and abroad.  The New Mass is a joke, priests are being brought up on abuse charges everyday.  Most of the Bishops, and even the Pope, put covering their own rear-ends before helping the victims of abuse....and when these people do engage with the world they often act like secular activists rather than men of prayer, as Cardinal Sarah has recently pointed out.

The Catholic Church is dying before our eyes.

Thus I find it not surprising that this Cathedral has burnt to the ground.  It is just a sad, sad, sad reflection not only on the state of the Church in France, but globally.

But hey, maybe it will make some people, both inside and outside the church, think a little about our current situation.

Basically we are seeing the heart of France being ripped out before us.  This church was a symbol of the Christian spirit, the Catholic spirit, the Medieval spirit and the French spirit.

Even a materialist could see this, I think.  At the least this building was representative of some of the highest ideals of a people.  One doesn't need to be Catholic to see that.  People don't build and maintain such a building for nothing.

Its a sad day, whether you choose to see this as just an accidental burning of an impressive old building or something much, much deeper.

I am sad, I think more sad then I yet realize.  When the initial, (for lack of a better word) "excitement" wears off, I will know more how I feel about this.
