Basically we are seeing the heart of France being ripped out before us.  This church was a symbol of the Christian spirit, the Catholic spirit, the Medieval spirit and the French spirit.

Even a materialist could see this, I think.  At the least this building was representative of some of the highest ideals of a people.  One doesn't need to be Catholic to see that.  People don't build and maintain such a building for nothing.

Its a sad day, whether you choose to see this as just an accidental burning of an impressive old building or something much, much deeper.

I am sad, I think more sad then I yet realize.  When the initial, (for lack of a better word) "excitement" wears off, I will know more how I feel about this.

I agree somewhat.

It's interesting to reflect on my own reactions to the fire-  unequivocally it's a tragedy- and my ambivalence about what you are saying regarding the Catholic church.

As an Englishman,  I have five centuries of distrust towards the Catholics and their Church.

With excellent reason,  the Church was seen as deeply inimical to England and English rulers.

There are modern echoes of this right up to this very moment.

As an irreligious person I find this stuff bubbling up in me very intriguing.

Sure.  There are accidents without any deeper meaning.

But this building is a symbol of Christendom, probably more than any other building in the world.

Its burning on the eve of Easter, at a time when the Catholic Church is reaping the full fruits of abandoning its tradition with Vatican II, cannot be a mere coincidence..

Of course it can.  There is no deeper meaning.  Shit just happens. The End.

Most people leave that sort of superstition behind as reason displaces a belief in signs.

Looks like they may not be able to save the cathedral itself...

And there is a danger of the fire spreading to neighboring buildings.

Nah, just the opposite is true.  Rationalism and materialism represent, rather, a narrowing of vision.

As Plato said, quoting Homer, in reference to the spiritually blind:

"Better to be the poor servant of a poor master, and to endure anything, rather than think as they do and live after their manner."

But anyways, your attitude is exactly why this Cathedral is burning.  Its invisible, spiritual supports, have dried up.

What a shame. :/

Someone else mentioned it earlier but it's kinda surprising there are still ANY great buildings left. The fact that any of them are still standing after hundreds of years is in itself, miraculous. Wink What with humans wanting to human (war, vandalism, neglect, no money, etc..) coupled with natural erosion, I'm just glad I've had the opportunity to see some of these old structures. Hopefully the building's been scanned and photographed enough over the years to have a digital replica for posterity.

I heard that the Hunchback was cooking frog's legs and French fries..

How they managed back in the days to pour boiling oil on assailants without setting the cathedral on fire is a total mystery!
