Very open- minded and tolerant of you, Limey.

The native Hawaiians have already lost their autonomy. Now you want to take their sacred land too.

Why do these scientists need a billion dollar telescope anyways? Talk about a waste of money!

Seriously, this is a classical colonialist mentality on display here by Limey.... the only culture that matters is post- enlightenment Western culture.

Neo-colonialism anyone?

Are you, a Christian,  ascribing value to the mumbo jumbo of the Hawaiian religions?

They're only building it to prove that god doesn't exist.  That's what science is all about you know.

Yes and then that makes god angry. Earthquakes are actually god protesting giant telescopes.

FC,

I've been thinking about how I can respond conversationally without coming across as a total dick.

You're dodging, Limey.

Why not just call the Hawaiians savages, because that's about the gist of your viewpoint.  Wink

I think you're smart enough to know science in no way disproves religion.

You may believe only matter exists. Fine. But science does not prove that. Materialism is a philosophical position, not a scientific one.

Besides, materialism is dying. It's 2019, not 1819. You guys are behind the curve. Materialist physics, for instance, has basically hit a brick wall. As my wife says "physics is a dying science."

Your materialist viewpoint makes it very hard to truly respect, any cultures idea of the sacred.

At best, as a materialist, you can only say you support people's right to believe what you consider to be nonsense.

But that's not a very convincing position.

If you want to defend natives religious rights you have to take them seriously. But as a materialist you cannot do that.   Wink

No it isn't.

I actually do not think that their cultural feelings should be trampled on.

My first post on this thread was gently teasing Archie and my second, you, because both of you are Christians and presumably rate the Hawaiian religion as utter nonsense that will keep its practitioners out of Heaven.

I support people's right to believe any old bollocks; you can't really expect anyone to take some of the stuff religion throws out seriously,  can you?
