8chan is/was no different than the many ISIS/radical islamist message boards used to radicalize people. Same deal, different audience.

What was previously I guess a polite request has now been upgraded to a subpoena:

House Homeland Security Committee subpoenas 8chan owner
The Hill, August 14, 2019
https://thehill.com/policy/cybersecurity/457454-house-homeland-security-committe...

“At least three acts of deadly white supremacist extremist violence have been linked to 8chan in the last six months,” they said. “We have questions on what is being done to counter this trend so we can be sure it is being properly addressed. Receiving testimony from Mr. Watkins is critical to our oversight on this matter."

Again, they should tell Congress to stick it.

This idea doesn't seem particularly well-thought out for a few reasons:

A. If a website becomes a "cesspool of hate," we're going to invite the guy who owns it to the biggest possible PR event for his web site we can throw.

B. The third thing Congress is specifically prohibited from doing in the Bill of Rights is anything whatsoever related to the people's ability to post their thoughts on this web site. So, they invite this guy to something and he has all the ammunition on his side while they have nothing and everybody knows it. If he says "I'm doing nothing to stop what people post on my site because, unlike you, I believe in Free Speech," and walks out of the room, he becomes a hero to millions of people who never heard of him the day before.

C. What is the goal here? To get people to quit posting on this site? I've never been to 8-chan and know nothing about it, but it seems like a place for a bunch of wackos to go drink their own bathwater. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't think it seems particularly evangelical in any way. I doubt they're converting many. Don't we want the wackos to congregate in one place where we can keep an eye on them? Let them post their inane garbage and monitor the dang site profiling for those most likely to commit an act of violence. Shut them down (or get this guy to do it for you) and they won't stop. They'll just go somewhere else and you'll have to go find them there.

They can't shut him down. The constitution protects his website. The hearing will simply be the usual pontificating and speech making.
