Pakistan is banning single-use plastic bags:

And they plan to plant 10b trees, after having planted nearly a million acres of trees in a 3-year campaign ending 2017:

Now, if only they would stop funding/training terrorists, supporting Islamist madrasahs, and exporting nuclear technology.

Not to long ago plastic bags were  recommended to replace the dreaded paper bags which the tree huggers wanted to outlaw. Now we want people to use the paper as the plastic is bad news..

Pakistan  is planting trees because they need them to make the paper bags!! Tree huggers all over the world should be outraged!!
Btw...
I use neither, opting instead for my homemade bags that are stronger and hold more Wink

If Pakistan, a third-world country, can work proactively to clean up its environmental footprint, then so can we.  If they can look at their polluted rivers and cities and take at least a few basic steps to moderate the decay, then so might we.  If they believe a tree-planting campaign is a cost-effective way to moderate the damage of GW-induced flooding and to lower their carbon emissions, than we might try that too.

And we have similar programs across the country. Not sure we need a federal law mandating a plastic bag ban. The US Forest Service has a reforestation program, as do state forest services, and there are volunteer planting programs.

I found a stat that says the US plants about 1.6b trees a year -- half by forestry companies.  If Pakistan is planning a 10b planting campaign over 5 years, they are beating us nominally and kicking our ass on trees-per-square-mile.

Why isn't there a national movement to plant?  They are such cheap carbon sinks, they retain stormwater runoff, they cool the warming air, they cut AC consumption, they clean out pollutants, etc.  When I drive past certain areas I see low-density neighborhoods dominated by 5-acre lots with barely a tree on them.  People maintain vast lawns, but only ever come out to enjoy them when they drive their riding mowers.

Even in my older neighborhood of much smaller lots, I see a lot of houses devoid of shade, with air conditioners thrumming all day.  Why?

This is such an easy step to take, and we somehow refuse to do it.  We should be planting along every street, every parking lot, every office park.  Wooded lots should be the norm, and bare grass lots an oddity.  It should be supported by govt subsidy, and deductible on local taxes (if only for the savings in stormwater runoff).  It needs visibility and leadership from the highest levels.

Kinda like Pakistan is doing.

We do not?  I have been overseas and can speak first hand about us, we are a very green society and self-conscious about our environment.  Just because we do not go all in on the left's desire to take over our economy does not mean that we are below standards when compared to the rest of the world.

"Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the Christian religion, whose morality is so sublime and pure (and) which insures to the good eternal happiness, are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments."

Our actions seem to stand in contrast.  We are hobbling our environmental initiatives, knee-capping the regulatory services, and vigorously promoting fossil-burning.  We're even taking out our own engangered species act.  When emerging economies like Pakistan, China, and India are doing more pound-for-pound, and are leading nationwide campaigns while we hem and haw over bag taxes and refuse to admit the globe is warming -- it means we are pointed in the wrong direction.

Nominally. According your stat, we've been planting 1.6 billion trees for several years now. Seems like Pakistan has some catching to do.

These nations are implementing alternative energy sources: wind, solar, etc? And in terms of endangered species, Chinese markets are a significant factor in species endangerment.

Let's not pretend that these are some kind of example setting nations.
