Well.

I had "the Testaments" pre-ordered on Kindle.

It pinged on my phone at midnight (it's 2241 here now) and i just finished it.

What a great book. Worthy sequel to the excellent Handmaid's Tale.

Anyone else got it lined up?

I loved the first one and I am watching the series on Hulu.  That will be my next read.

No blacks will buy that cap.  Look at the bill! It's all curved like normal people wear. The bill of the hat is supposed to be flat with a shiny goofy looking sticker in the middle of it.

No self respecting thug would be without his sticker!

I never understood why she is considered "serious" literature and Stephen King isn't.

Why? Her work is as hack as his is, and his has no less "social issues" in it than hers does. His first book, Carrie, was critical of an evangelical upbringing, and his third book, The Shining, was critical of alcoholic, abusive husbands and also featured a sympathetic and heroic portrayal of a black man.

R.L. Stine has sold about as many books as King (although he's written 3-4X as many). I say we nominate him for the subject of the "why isn't he taken as seriously as [insert 'serious' author here]?" question.

It's not about the number of books written and sold but the quality of the writing, characters, and plot. Atwood is schlock.

I will say, though, that his portrayal of black characters, though always sympathetic and heroic, is always hokey and stereotypical, but he's from Maine, so he's probably never actually seen a real live black person before. And he doesn't have nearly enough LGBT LGBTQ characters in his books for today's tastes.

I wouldn't know. I've never read Atwood's work.

I have read several of King's, though I don't read them any more. I always liked his short stories better anyway. I think the writing is a lot tighter. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy some of his novels and I'm hardly a literary snob. Read what you like and don't worry about what people say about it is my motto.

Actually, the audio version of King's "On Writing" is pretty good too. I recommend that.

At any rate, I'm fairly sure, especially after he dies, that his works will eventually be regarded as classics compared to whatever the current novelists are producing at that future date.
