Weeeellll.... not really.

The teacher should have simply accepted what the students told her they were thankful for and left it at that without making any moral judgemental statements. Think of how that 10 year old student felt, to be told that his two dads were in fact bad people? That was totally out of line. It would also be out of line if the teacher were gay and told a student with male and female parents that their relationship was wrong.

The sub was completely entitled to hold an opinion about gay parenting but the classroom was not the place to express it. She deserved to be let go for her lack of judgement and, yes, compassion for all the students in the class.

That three students in the class told the teacher up front that her rant was upsetting them, and then she persisted to the point where the students left the classroom to complain to the principal... that speaks volumes about how inappropriate that teacher was.

I agree. Ranting your prejudices at little children is just wrong. The classroom is not the place for this type of behavior, and the school was right to fire her.

Basically the message is "shut up!"

They are desperate to remove the first amendment.

I don’t think a public school teacher should be telling her students that gayness is wrong.

Nor should public school teachers tell their students that gayness is right or acceptable.

Correct.

If this kid said they were thankful they got adopted by a black family and the teacher went off on blacks adopting kids of another race, I doubt we would see Bert so quick to defend her "right" to express her opinion in front of the student.

Teachers really just need to focus on the core subjects and stay clear of social issues at this point. Always someone will be pissed off. To minimize the annoyance, stay clear of the obvious bullshit at least.

.

If you are a teacher directly attacking your student and making them feel like shit by saying their parents are "wrong", yes, that is exactly the message. What don't you get? What did that kid do to deserve the teaching publicly attacking them? You are a teacher. You are not paid to use "free speech" as an excuse to attack kids in your class and humiliate them.

She should not have been forced out of her job for having one.

No, she was forced out of her job for going after her student, in front of all the other students, about something the student couldn't control anyway. Don't lie about it lying Bert. She wasn't forced out for "having an opinion", she went after a kid on paid time in front of the kids classmates and she should have known better.

LOL

"Going after"  Roll Eyes You are so fragile. The teacher just went on a long boring self righteous rant. Sort of what you do every day here.

How do you avoid social issues while teaching history, English literature, etc.?

But there are no children here, who are a captive audience to an authority figure. We as adults have the savvy and ability to respond or ignore; those kids really don't, although in this case, some tried.

Expressing one's opinion is not an attack unless you take other people's opinions way too seriously. Just because someone says what you are doing is wrong doesn't mean it is. You can have your opinion about it, and they can have theirs. This is what kids should be taught. It would help to alleviate a lot of conflict.
